tution caterin g to the huge air base near
by. In a series of court hearings the pastor
lost out, but his enthusiasm for " the
cause" was not lighten ed and his subsequent
activities to clean up "gambling and liquor
interests" brought him a charge of bribery
when he was caught with marked bills and
charged with attempted extortion.
This might seem like a localized story to
you and one not worthy of treatment in a
national publication, but that's where you' re
wrong. The Reverend started something and
the reverb era tions have echoed 'way back
to the Atlanti c seaboard. After ' his initial
publicity and the n ewspaper accounts of
his activiti es, th e R everend received letters
from all over the country from interested in·
dividuals and groups desirous of "cleaning
up" their particular localities and asking
for an outline of hi s program so they could
proceed as profitably and as effectively.
Th e Bible says : " By their works ye shall
know th em" and so it behooves operators
and operating groups throughout the coun·

individuals and dig deep into the motives
tha t provoke such unwarranted and un·
necessary attacks on our industry.
When you and I were little boys the
rabbi, minister or priest in our communi-
ties were res pected individu als who serio
ously should ered th e activiti es they had
dedicated their lives to, and enj oyed satis·
fa ction and full payment from the ch eer,
comfort and spiritual consolation they
could distribute amon g the members of
their flo cks.
Such well·intention ed men still exist by
the hundreds of thousands but every once
in a while a bl ack shee p will crop up who
will use th e cloak of christianity and th e
Holy Book to cover a multitude of ne·
fariou s acts that besmirch the particular
church of which he is an affiliate and
cause all of us to exclaim "how come"?
Members of the clergy have considered
it part of th eir sup ervisory activities to see
that sin and temptation do not exist in
reach of th eir parishioners. That's all very
well, but when said member of th e clergy
extends his hand from under the back of
his cloak and says, "Fill it brother and I'll

Th e Red Cross has b een entrusted by the
