Right now, with spot reconversion pro-
grams at work in various parts of th e
country, there is much talk about just how
Ameri can manufacturers will proceed. Will
they be satisfi ed to resume manufa cture of
the identical prod ucts they offered before
the war and if so, will th e public as eagerly
accept them as previous to P earl H arbor ?
Durin g th e war months most of the
major manufacturers went off on a deli ght-
ful and fa ntastic excursion in advertisin g,
depicting the post-war world and th e mar-
velous new gadgets, devices, appliances and
the like that will make th e new life most
fa scin atin g and interes ting. Like a fairy
paintin g on a ca nvas of weird and wonder-
ful images, the manufacturers depi cted l ife
as bein g a ve ritable fairyland wh ere th e
mere touch of buttons would do almost
anythin g one had a m ind to ima gine. So
thoroughly was this course pursued th at
a mere re-birth of a pre-war item wi ll
brin g a bi g " wh y" from an eager buyin g
public.

be nothin g more than a sli ghtly revamp ed
model of th e last pre-war machin e. It is
true tha t our manufacturers have not gon e
off on a wild tan ge nt and painted elaborate
pi ctures of Rube Goldb erg devi ces to fo l-
low the war. Instead, when th e~ h ave
spo ken through th e trade press, they have
subscribed to th e war program and the
bond drives and spok en very modestly of
equipm ent to come in th e happy days
a hea d. For thi s our manufacturers are t o
be commended.
We don' t subscribe to the .rumors aAo at
con cernin g the first machin es to b e offered.
It is true that manufacturers have received
the green light to resum e manufacture of
parts if such manufacturing does not inte r-
fe re with war contracts they are at work
on. And, it is easy to ima gine that the
ma nufacture of : parts coul d easily lead to
new machines for a mere assembly of the
various parts wou ld result in th e b irth of
a new machin e. But, broth er, don' t count
on thi s ever becoming a r eality.
Durin g the past six. months or more
we've talked to a good many important
manufacturers in the fi eld, we've had con-
fid ential letters from th em, we've discussed
th e future wit h their representatives and
we beli eve we can state with some d'e"'ree
of certainty that our manufacturers have
te rrific plans for th e post-war manufa ctur-
ing days a nd from their various assembly
lin es will come revolu tionary new devices
embody ing th e precision construction tech-
nique acquired through meticulous manu -
fa cturing under war department supervi-
sion . The devices we have h eard about, ex-
amined sketches on, and had explain ed to
us, will live up to what the new America
will be expect ing as th e result of th e un-
usual a dvertisin g p rogram desc ribed at the
beg innin g of th is commentary,
Yes, the Coin Machin e Industry h as
ha rk ened to th e voice of pro gr ess and is
on its way to a glorious fu ture. It may well
be th at we, a nd the other optimistic souls
who feel as we do , are embarked on a
hecti c journey ; we don' t think it will be
but if it is it'll be fun and we've put up
our mon ey to say the plans on th e draftin g
boa rds of our manufacturin g-suppliers are
r ight. We think th e future's going to prove
we're ri ght.
But, just as it was in th e days of the
'49ers, if we're wron g we can always go
back to th e hill s and pan gold. We th ink
it's better to have faith in th e future, par-
ti cularly when your faith can make it help
to com e t rue, than to si t ·on the sidelin es
in hours of greatest opportunity.
H ere's to the fu ture of th e Coin Ma -
chin e Industry. May it be prosperous and
stron g and may it take its place alon gside
th e oth er important branch es of our in -
·d ustrial eco nomy and bask in the li ght of
ever-widen ing acceptance and tolerance.
