CHICAGO- When the war is over the
~everage industry will enjoy the largest
market it has ever had, and hundreds of
thousands of women in war work who have
found in ca rbonated beverages a "lift" dur-
ing fati gue will join the custom er potential
alon g with millions of returning servicemen
who have become soft drink " minded," too,
the American Bottlers of Carbonated Bev-
erages believes.
' This deductio n resulted from th e 26th
annual convention of the association where
post-war plans were di sc ussed and distri-

chin e units, industrial plants, r estaurants,
school s and other centers. Th e ve ndin g
units loom important as a busin ess that
was just expandin g when ma nufacture was
curtail ed by th e war, it was pointed out.
According to John F . Lea ry, president
of tli e AB CB, th ere is little lik elihood of a
greater variety of flavors than there are
now, when practi cally eve ry "acceptab le"
fl avo r has been exploited.
Limited to capacity only by restrictions
on sugar, the industry produ ced 700,000,-
000 cases of carbona ted beverages in 1944
fo r civi lian purposes. With the additional
production for mili tary PX's, canteens a nd
for vital industrial centers, it is expected
th at produ ction will equ al or pass th e 1940
mark of 740,000,000 cases.
It was said that $50,000,000 will be s pent
by th e industry after the war for new con -
struction of plants and equip ment.
Postwar needs were estimated at 16,000
trucks immedi ately to maintain the normal
50,000 trucks necessa ry in the industry,
and hundreds of machinery units, includ-
in g automatic ca ppers, bottle washers, ca r-
bo nators, crowners, fi lters, mi xers, labelers,
con veyors, etc., in addition to many more
bottles and cases.
It was sa id that th e industry, com-
posed of over 6,000 individual manufa ctur-
ing pla nts loca ted in 3,000 cities a nd towns
in the country, norm ally employs 90,000
persons with an annual payroll of $180,.
000,000. Its products are on sale in over a
million a nd a quarter retail outlets.
During th e wa r, employment in the in-
dustry ·dropped to about 76,000, and post-
