Modern Houdinis Of
The Industry
W hen the war is over and new eq ui p·
ment, parts and ~upplies are available in
needed quantit ie, the I ndu try should
righ tfu ll y issue ci ta ti on placques to those
specialty organ izations wh ic h came into
the breach during the shortages a nd hel ped
operators keep their equipment operating.
T he time when new eq ui pmen t wi ll be
avai lab le is a long way off and all
thoughts of reconversio n have been shelved
as th e government pursues a program of
gett ing on with war and fo rgetting abo ut
what we're go ing to do after the war.
T herefore the operator must make hi s pres·

period.
Years ago Ho udini main ta ined a magic

to amaze and am u e mill io ns of people. In
la ter years th e T hayer H ouse of Magic
in Los Angeles wa th e headquarters for
all types of mystifying gadge ts ranging in
pr ice f rom five cents on up to f ive thou·
sand doll a rs. Magic ians made th e spo t
port of ca ll for new tr icks a nd illusions to
add to th eir rou tin es a nd T hayer became

Here in our own I nd ustry, and in Los

tired and sick co in·opera ted eq ui pment-

ready to go out and gather in the co in

factory.
We were amazed by th is little gro u p of
artisan and upon investigation found the
oq::an izat ion cons isted of four ind ividua ls:
Bern ie Roberts, M. L. Hazelr igg, Fred
Kern and Bill Garne r. The men are co·
partn ers in Automat ic Electron ics and
a long w ith wa r contrac ts they have been
active on since Pearl Harbor, have founded

T he boys at Automa tic E lectro ni c don't
classify themselves as purely mechanics.
T hey've all had a fl ing a t opera tin g and
repa iring equ ipment, but i n their curren t
enter prise they are devot ing themse lve to
so meth ing more th an repair and main·
tenance. They, through the ir thoroughl y

facture on th e spot a ny part necessary to
put a mac hi ne back in ope rati on as good
as new.
W e loo ked a t a l ine·up of ma rble tab les,

eq ui pment is involved.
Pr ide in work is reflected as th ey eagerly
show the various parts they have manu·
factured to place thousa nds of do llars
worth of equip men t back in permanent op·

A stroll throug h the shop will warm the
cockles of the heart of any machine· hop·

ATCHEZ-Bu iness was never better
during the Holidays and the trend of ex·
cellent business among operators of the
Magnolia state seems to be con tinuin g.
The New Year brought several new
businesses to Mississippi. Foremost was the
E. C. Keathley Co., operators of electric
phonographs and other co in operated de·
vices. They bought all of th e Natchez and
Mississippi machines and some of the Lou·
isiana machines which have been operated
by J. A. Hochew for the F. A. B. Co.
with the aid of Ham. B.
elson, former
owner, now operating slo ts in Louisiana.

Silas Redd Co., who in turn old to Bill
Eidt's Enterpri es and now there are only
two major operators in this city. Eidt and
Keathley, and they ure really BIG OPER·
ATOR , as each weighs well over th e 240
pound mark.
Edward Newell, former service manager
of th e Service Novelty Co., is now con·
nected with the Southern Amusement Co.,
distributors of coin operated eq uipment.
A new service hop ha s been opened for
business by George Wilson, who states that
he has more business than he can handle
at the present tim e.
