A. C. Roberts, partner of Wolf Sales Co.,
is now at the Aerial Gunnery School, Tyn·
dall Field, Panama, Florida. A. A. Roberts,
brother of A. C. Roberts and also a part·
ner of Wolf Sales, reports a new arrival
at his home. It's a baby boy, born F ebru·
ary 24, weighs 7 pounds, 6 ounces. The
first baby in the family. His name is
Douglas Clark Rob erts.
J. P. Blackwell is taking a vacation in
the Sunny South with hi s family. H e is
expected to return as soon as spring
opens up.
G. J. Fendrick, one of the largest oper·
ators in th e city- known as the "Scale
man," said there h ad been a decided
slump in business si nce last fall and espe·
cially durin g th e winter, because so many
service men are leaving the di strict. There
has been very little buying of machines
since last summer. Many firms have closed
up, consequently all operators have sur·

plus equipment on hand at this time.
F endrick said that there had been a
grea t deal of pilfering and breaking into
machines lately. It is believed that hi gh
school boys and so me of the soldi ers sta·
tion ed in the Denver area are responsible.
Many of the latter have b een workin g for
coin machine comp anies in the East and
some of th em h ave "master keys to phono·
graph machin es. So it is pretty well estab·
lished that much of the pilfering has been
from the service men in training a t Lowry
a nd Buckley Fields and at Fort Logan.
Up to the present they have b een unable
to a pprehend the culprits.
Fendrick has a long·time record as an
operator of weighing machines, amusemen t
machines and arcade equipment for almost
48 years. H e has been an operator in Den·
ver for almost 24 years.

In army parlance, it's the man behind
the man behind th e gun who is th e de·
cisive factor in bringing forth a .successful
military decision. In th e jargon of wired
music, it is the girl behind the mike be·
hind the operator who either makes or
breaks a location.
If a citation for efficiency were on the
presentation agenda, Russell Amusement's
Martha Stivers would be a forerunning
contestant. Martha is a dark chubby girl
who , on first appearance, looks like the
type at their best relaxed in an easy chair
nibbling chocolates. But behind the turn·
tabl es, she is a veritable dynamo.
Life b ehind th e wire goes somethin g like
this: The yellow light, signifying that 15c
has b een chuted, fla shes on the panel. She
flips the switch and says, "Number, please."
The customer names two records by nu-
merical designation and th en gives one by
name--or h e calls out only two. The happy
adjustment must be made, the records must
be slipped out of th eir jackets and placed
alongside the turntable, the customer's
superfluous conversation- such as "What
are y'doin' toni ght, Babe?"-must be cut
short and the other eleve n or twelve turn·
tabl es kept fun ctionin g.
It's not " Blue Monday," th at h arasses
Martha but "Tempestuous Saturday," be·
cause pressure and play are at full blast
th en. The most aggravating situation is
when two drunks speak into the same
