ourselves in the Boy Scout effort. Inquire
into these activities in your community and
get in th ese move men ts either throu gh your
Lodge or by direct contact. I assure you
that if you do this you will find a great
so urce of pleasure for yourself and will
have a better understandin g of the obliga-
tion that we, as Arcade owners, have to the
whole Nation.
The Arcade, wherever it is placed, is at
all tim es a magnet that will draw th e chil-
dren from a wide area surroundin g it.
Whether it is a wholesome spot for th ese
youngsters to co ngregate or possessive of
the worst of inAuences depends directly on
you and your attitude toward them. We do
not permit children in our Arcade during
school hours on school days or children
und er 18 to remain in th e Arcade after 9
at night. Since we are near a large school
we do not permit them in th e Arcade dur-
ing the noon hour because th ey might spend
their lunch money with us instead of for
the food th ey need.
Bear in mind at all tim es, wheth er we are
opera ting Bell machines, Pin Games or Ar-
ca des, the solution to our problems is co m-
mon decency and respect for th e other fel-
low's peace of mind and happiness. You
can' t blame the authorities for things you
bring on yourself. It has been my expe-
rience in dealing with th e Po licing Authori-
ties in connection with the Coin Machin e
Business in many section s of the country,
that th ey are as a whole anxious to protect
your interests with th e same tolerance th ey
do any other legitimate merchant. That is,
if you show th em the respect due th em by
co nductin g your business affairs so they are
not constan tly bei ng made th e goat of your
greed. For example : Go the limit in your
operations a nd then go over and si t in th e
Chief's office at the Police Sta ti on and
watch him slowly go nuts. My advice is to
coopera te with th e poli ci ng officials of your
community by asking th eir advice as to
what you operate an d making certai n in
your own mind that what you ask will not
put him on the spot.
As coi n machin e men we are dea ling with
the General Public and it's the General
Public th at eith er puts thumbs down on our
activities or gives us the green light. Ou r
busi ness must be conducted in th e full li ght
wh ere everyo ne Ca n see it. As you know
there are groups in every community that
make it a point to look at our business
with a jaundiced eye and if we give them
a leg to stand on th ey will use the Coin
Machine Industry as the brunt for every
reform Aare-up.
In closing let me state again . . . Keep
your operation clean by your own sta ndards
of decency, strive to make better citizens
of th e children that you con tact in your
place of business and treat them as you
would have others trea t your children. Offer
some of your time and self to your com-
munity and its many civic activities. You
wi ll be welcome, I assure you. Be sure
you're right and th e whol e town will back
you up with th eir business and th eir good
will.
