Mint Has Coin Reco,rd
WASHINGTON-In addition to turning
out 800,000,000 coins for more than a score
. of foreign countries, the United States
Mint produced the record number of
2,844,000,000 American coins last year, in
comparison with 2,036,000,000 in 1943.
Coins for France were produced by the
Mint from melted-down shell cases, while
American experts drew designs, made dies,
and cast the. coins for a new monetary
system for Ethiopia. The Mint turned out
copper kroners for Greenland and silver
riyals with a design of intricate tracings
lor Saudi Arabia. Foreign orders are fi lled
at cost by the Mint.
The total of domestic coins produced in
1944 included 2,149,000,000 pennies. Laid
edge to edge, these coins would span the
continent from New York to San Fran-
cisco ten times, with enough left over for
.
two strings between Chicago and San
Antonio.
Because more coins of larger denomina-
tions were made in 1943, that year's face
value total of $136,000,000 exceeds that
of 1944 by $15,000,000.
Slot Losses Recoverable
ST. PAUL, Minn.-A loser may sue to
recover his losses in a slot machine, ac-
cording to a recent decision handed down
by the Supreme Court of Minnesota. The
ruling was announced in a suit in which
a confessed embezzler of over $20,000 de-
clared he'd put most of the amount un-
successfully into slot machines of an Amer-
ican Legion post in Albert Lea, whom he
was suing for recovery.

"The machine is the owner's robot or
mechanical gambler, which not only ac-
cepts the bets of all comers but decides
them also_ It is _ . . a device or contrivance
to determine as between the player and
the keeper of the machine 'who wins or
loses his money on a contest of chance_'
Consequently, slot machines are universally
regarded as gambling devices."
So'undies Devises Plan
CHICAGO-In cooperation with the
Government's program to conserve 35mm
film stock, So undies Distributing Corp_ of
America has announced a program of re-
lease of aptly termed "Victory Programs."
Every other week the firm is releasing
an 8-subject reel consisting of seven pic-
tures selected from Soundies library of
more than 1,500 subjects, and one new
fi lm featuring colored talent_
On the alternate weeks a regular pro-
gram, made up of eight brand new pic-
tures, will be released. In making the
announcemen t, Soundies said that under
this plan is sure it can continue indefi-
nitely to release a program each week.
Film shortages are most acute in pro-
viding add itional prin ts of 35mm subjects
already shot and recorded. Recent quota
clips on raw stock by the WLB in favor
of heavy military needs do not affect pro-
gram reels already assembled and printed
for distribu tion_
