Watch Your Answers Now!

ow many times have you heard an op-
erator answer a location's complaint
H
with the cryptic phrase "Don't you know
there's a war on?"
Yes, I know there has been much said
in the trade press concerning this despic-
able answer but the fact remains that it is
just as prevalent today as when first orig-
inated months back and the sermon on not
using it cannot be preached too frequently
by our publications.
Maybe you have already warned your
routemen against using such a type of an-
swer to complaints, but have you checked
to see that your orders have been followed
out? It might pay you to do that little tri ck
without further delay if you have a genuine
interest in holding your locations when the
war is over.
Now, more than at any time in the his-
tory of our business, your help should be
more friendly, helpful and courteous_ It's
easy to make a lot of enemies now who will
very gleefully "get even" when conditions
again become normal and new operator,
coming into the business are going to find

a lot of good locations happy to see them.
Time spent now in selling the location
on how hard it is to serve him and maintain
the type of service and consideration you'd
like, and what the operator is up against in
a war economy, will pay big dividends
later_ The operator cannot tell the location
this story too often.
Some operators have very successfully
used the mails to acquaint their locations
with their desire to be of maximum service
and the handicaps they are facing. The let-
ters have not been alibis for poor service
but rather frank talks on just what both
the location and operator have to contend
with at present and asking for a fair con-
sideration before making undue demands
on the operator.
Think it over, Mr. Operator!

NEW YORK-Mike Munves, the "Ar-
cade King" and one of the real old timers
in jobbing and distributing circles, has
completed bis month long moving job to
his new home and invi'tes operators to come
in and visit them at 510-514 West 34th
Street.
In the new quarters Munves has 21,000
square feet of space on his two floors and
basement. Decorators are completing their
work and when finished there is no doubt
but what the establishment will be one of
the show spots in the industry in the East.
Munves is having a completely equipped
Arcade assembled in one part of the build-
ing so that operators can visit this model
Arcade and see ju t how a successful Ar-
cade should be arranged, the variety of
machines necessary for best results, and
thus study the Arcade business from the
proper perspective.

hoOt meal and mail call, the fight loOses its
pugnaci.ous appeal and events settle d.own
toO n.ormal-or as n.ormal as they'll ever get
ar.ound here.
Even fell.ows .on the same shift frequently
clash .on matters .of ventilati.on and tempera-
ture. S.ome like 'em hoOt; s.ome like 'em
c.old.
The big news event .of the m.onth was the
fire in the tent adj.oining .our hut. It .oc-
cUlTed during a "medium Williwaw." Sn.ow
had practically c.overed the t.op .of the tent.
It was sifting f1.our-like thr.ough the crevices
and d.o.orway. A leak in the .oil heater
started the c.onflagrati.on. Occupants st.o.od
ar.ound, stricken with the tragedy .of it all,
while the b.oards and RoOme (we are hoOp-
ing) burned.
A stalwart fr.om .out" ab.ode saved the day
by a brilliant maneuver. He sh.oveled sn.ow
.on the blaze and became a hero. The tent,
h.owever, was wh.olly h.oley and had toO be
aband.oned in the face .of str.ong f.orces .of
Nature which attacked furi.ously.
THE REVIEW is arriving safely, but due to
.omissi.on .of my APO number, coo pies are
det.oured toO the Seattle .ofTice bef.ore starting
.on the l.ong trek.
Perhaps y.ou w.ould be interested in THE
REVIEW'S debut here. Well, I was singing
the Ch.ow Line Blues during Mail Call. The
c.opy was handed me, and with a half d.ozen
d.ogfaces l.o.oking .over my sh.oulder (ah, Pri-
vacy, what ferv.or I will w.o.o y.ou with when
I unkhaki), I slipped .off the wrapper. At
sight .of the fr.ont coOver picture, there
s.ounded a ch.orus .of l.ow whistles and un-
printable remarks. I l.o.oked up briefly, then
d.own at the magazine. But the magazine
wasn't there because s.ome snatcher was
drinking in the coOver. It received eye-awed
circulati.on as it leapt fr.om hand toO hand .
Then a lad ventured toO l.o.ok inside. Dis-
app.ointment welled up because instead .of
.other girlie whirlies, there was .only the c.old
metal .of machines.
Thus ended TilE REVIEW'S debut in the
unsun-kissed Aleutians. It was strictly an
anti-climax foOl' the b.oys but just like ~
breath .of air fr.om h.ome foOl' y.our c.or-
l·esp.ondent.
Y.ou've heard President R.o.osevelt's sum-
mary .of the war and y.ou've heard predic-
ti.ons and recapitulati.ons fr.om General
MacArthur, Admirals Halsey and King,
General Arn.old, and .other high-rankers.
N.ow coOmes this terse c.omment from Private
McJerk, the Aleutian Rambler, wh.o has dug
f.oxh.oles, p.ost h.oles, .out h.ouses, garbage
dumps, hut h.oles. Says McJerk: "The
identity .of the secret weap.on has at last
been disc.overed. It's the sh.ovel."

NATCHEZ, Miss.-C.onspicu.ous by its
absence is the usual lull in coin machine
business after the Christmas and New
Year's h.oliday rush d.own here in the deep
s.outhland and especially in the state .of
Mississippi. Business was never better.
C.oin machine merchants are being kept
busy, and there is, .of c.ourse, a premium .on
repair men-there are n.ot many left. The
army has taken the y.oung .ones and the
battle cry is n.ow "They're Either T.o.o
