So mewhere in th e Aleutians
Dear Mr. Blackford :
Army morale is as touchy a subj ec t as a
truck load of nitroglyceri n. xxxxxxxCE N·
SOREDxxxxxxx overstuffed chair and an-
nounces: " Morale is high amon g our over-
seas troops." Ano th er high-ranker shakes
his hea d dubiously and says, "In such-and-
such a zo ne morale is low." Drew P earson
of " Washington Merry-Go-Round" fame
columned that troo p morale in th e Al eu-
tians was of snake-belly altitude.
I cannot deny' or affirm Drew P earson's
statement because I am on e lon e soldier in
one lone sector of a vast area. However, as
I adjust thi s necktie-you h eard me right,
chum- I think I can cast a few rays of
li ght on this ticklish subject.
As I write, I am gazin g at an amazing
document. It is an order th at all inside
workers wear neatly pressed O. D. t rousers
and O. D. shirts with n eckties. Whil e it is
true that we now h ave cleaning service,
which is bo th prompt and thorough, we
also have williwaws, horizontal rain , snow,
sleet- AND MUD. How long will a " neatly
pressed" pair of trousers withstand th e rig-
ors of Aleuti an wea th er? About five min-
utes by the clock.
Definition : An optImIst is an old maid
who slee ps in a doubl e bed.
