Coin Machine Review (& Pacific ...)

Issue: 1944 April

operators-too many, in fac t-who, because
they're in l! seller's market, wi th more
customers than merchandise and machines,
forget that another day is coming. With
careless indifference and sometimes posi·
tive rudeness, they are slowly preparing for
the day when they will be bounced out in
a state of fury, never to return.
In a recent survey among restaurant
patrons it was disclosed that more people
complained of discourtesy in service than
of any other factor. And as for retail
storcs, Emi ly Post in a recent article says
that she receives dozens of letters each
morning. from people who have been out·
raged and bewildered by the treatment
they have received at the hands of short·
sighted sales people.
As a matter of fact, most locations are
very tolerant when they find they can't get
what they want. They recognize that Uncle
Sam's needs come first and are ready to
make what sacrifices are needed. But they
are entitled to have their patience matched
on the other side by the operator serving
the location. There is no reason for a
man to be told in substance to go to the
devil just because he has innocently asked
for something the operator cannot give him.
The more gently he's let down the easier
it will be for the operator to retain the
friendship and goodwill of the spot. It all
seems so obvious when you think about it.
It's merely a matter of getting yourself
and your routemen in the proper frame of
mind, so that every man and woman shall
reflect a spirit of friendliness and follow
the ' line of action dictated by the purest
self·interest-the line that leads straight
through the door of postwar prosperity and
progress.
An organization's spirit of courtesy and
' helpfulness generally is reflected from
hi/!her up so the whole thing starts with
you. Are you building business for tomor·
row--or asking for trouble? Why not pro·
claim a "Be Kind To Location·Owners"
week in your operations right now? You'll
find the results so promising and encourag·
ing that the "week" will stretch through
on repeat performances week·after·week
from now on, It's worth thinking about.

Mutoscope Has Music
LONG ISLAND, N. Y.-International
Mutoscope Corporation, the home of the
famous Photomatic aTld countless Arcade
machines, is now engaged entirely in war
work and the Mutos~opers work around the
clock to the strains of Bach, Beethoven,
Brahms and Liszt over the firm's new
music and announcement system.
In announcing the installation of the
p. a. system President William Rabkin
stated that its principal purpose is making
music available to those departments that
will benefit from it. Records and radio
programs that have been found beneficial
by scientists and industrial specialists will
be broadcast. It has been found that cer-
tain types of music are ideal for workers
doing what is described as slow precision
work. The selections ideal for this type of
work are a detriment rather than a help to
workers on a production line. And so the
Mutoscope music will be carefully selected
a'1d "piped" into various departments
where it will do the most good.
The p. a. system consists of six stations
---{Jne for every floor and two for the first
floor covering the office and M9 Assembly
Room.
Disc Quotas Improve
NEW YORK-The Chemical Division
of the War Production Board has issued an
order permitting the release of more shel-
lac to manufacturers of phonograph rec-
ords.
The order states that for the first quarter
of 1944 the manufacturers shall be permit·
ted to use 100 per cent of the quota they
consumed in 1941. For the balance of the
year no ruling has been released but it is
presumed that an equal amo1,lnt will be
avai lable, or a minimum reduction of 10
per cent be made.
This new release of shellac means that
disc makers will be using about 50 per cent
more shellac in th e first three months of
this year than they used in the last three
months of 1943.
