The Lock that resisted
TEMPTATION . . .
Thieves armed with lock picks or stillson wrenches were
usually wise enough to leave an ILCO severely alone. T hat's
because ILCO COIN MACHINE LOCKS were built to
resist picking and forcing.

FOR
OCTOBER
1943
CHICAGO- Ball y Manufacturing Co. is
helping the eager dedi ca tion of on e great
Navy crew to make it tou gher for Tojo-
and Adolph- by donatin g on e important
unit of the rec reational equipment for
their new carri er now being commission ed.
The unit given is a special communica·
tion system-s pea kers, amplifier, mi cro·
phone, record change r, converter, etc., com-
pl ete - for rebroadcastin g record ed music
throughout th e various crew li vin g qu ar-
ters on th e shi p.
Detai ls as to other urgently needed rec-
reational material for thi s ship have bee n
suppli ed to several oth er Chi cago manufac-
turers and their announcements are ex-
pected as soon as procurement can be ac-
complished.
In co mpli ance with war-tim e information
res trictions, no details concernin g th e ship
itself, even her nam e, are ava ilable. All
arran gements were hand led throu gh prop er
Naval officers. It is anticipated th at thi s
information may be released for pub lication
after th e war.
In announ cin g th e gift, Bally's Pres ident,
Ray Molon ey, stressed th e des irabili ty that
the entire industry- manufa cturers, dis-
tributors a nd op erators-join immediately
in raisin g a n "Adopt a Fi ghtin g Ship"
Fund to furni sh similar recrea tion al mate-
rial fo r as many more of our new shi ps as
we ca n.
H e suggested th at du e to present war-
time conditions, th e coin-machine trade
journals would be the best medium for put-
ting thi s over. Hi s proposal is that the
publication s unite in sponsoring th e drive
and set up a Chicago "Fund Headquarters."
He feels certa in that if the industry re-
sponds in its usual thorou gh fa shion ,
Bally can arran ge for proper Navy appli ·
cation of th e fund collected.
Moloney reported th at the idea devel-
oped throu gh fri endship with th e Com-
FIT C H BUR G

Branch:s in all Principal Cities
ma nder of on e of th e new ships, who
pointed out th at although rec reational
equipment- as mu sic, record suppli es, ath -·
letic gear, card a nd checker-type games-
is a valuabl e morale builder, it naturall y
ca nnot be provided as basic ship equip -
ment. In movin g to supp ly on e such item
for thi s ship, th e grea ter idea of an in-
dustry-wide proj ect was born.
He said , "Th e main point is th at here's
a most fittin g way for our industry to do
something extra and directly person al fo r
som e of our boys out th ere. Of course,
we're all doin g a n all -o ut job now- we
ma nufacture rs in vital war production and
every member of the di stributin g-operatin g
fraternity in every indiv idual way he can
best serve.
"But all those efforts have concentrated
on stark war needs-so it would be a great
ki ck to ti e ri ght back to ou r peace- time
livelihood by se rvin g at least a part of
these fighters' amusement needs.
" Naturally, th e bi g reward is in doin g
som ethin g person al for th e boys, now. How.
ever, it ou ght to be a fin e good-will effec t
for our post-w ar industry, too. After all,
on e of our ways of life these boys-a nd all
of us-are fi ghtin g for is th e right to go
on droppin g tha t ni ckle to hear a pet juke
tun e, to pick a favorite soft drink or to
enjoy the thrill and exas pera tion of tryin g
to put that ball in a scori ng pock et.
" Knowin g the instant, whol e-hearted way
thi s industry does thin gs, I know we ca n
make th is 'Adopt a Fi ght ing Shi p' idea a
great
thjn ~ . "

"Why so out of sorts, Iones?"
" Oh, I've had a very tryin g day. My of-
fi ce boy tried that old one about wantin g
the afternoon off to attend his grand-
mother's fun eral and I dec id ed to teach
him a lesson, so I sa id I woul d go with
h· 1m. "
" Well , was it a good ball game?"
"It wasn' t a ball ga me at all. It was his
grandmoth er's fun eral."
