Industry Gives Much
--Asks Little
by William Parr
I doubt if there is an oth er busin ess in th e
United States, or ano ther line of activity
that does so much, pays so mu ch, and asks
for so littl e th anks or consid eration, as the
Coin Machine Industry.
H ave you ever stopped to consider this
Industry- the part it is pl aying in our pres-
ent economic structure, the trem endous
taxes it is called upon to pay, the ski llful
help and cooperation given by every mem-
ber in every branch of the busin ess,- and
then stopped to realize what littl e is ex-
pected in return ?
Over the years th e history of the Coin
Machine Industry has been on e of constant
a nd steady growth until today the Industry
ranks in importance with many other
branches of the amusement business. The
way has been lon g, th e path has been diffi-
cult, but today-at its present position- it
asks little and gives much.
Our men have committed themselves
nobly in the war effort. Hundreds of th em
are in the front line trenches. Those at
home h ave freely contributed their time,
talents and abilities in various fi elds. Some
are air raid wardens, some are Civilian Ai r
Patrol pilots, all have aid ed in the various
scrap drives, war bond drives and almost to
a man. have made donations of blood over
and over agai n. And, in addition, they have
maintained their routes of amusement de-
vices and thus contributed substantially to
the maintena nce of the home morale of our
war workers and men in arms.
These men who have given so much and
asked for so little, have no pressure groups
or lobbyists to look out for th eir interests.
They ask for no subsidies, priorities or
prefeFences. All th ey ask is the privilege to
continue serving a nd be permitted a fai r
profit in return for th eir effort s.
The nation , as a whole, owes a debt of
gratitude to th e staun ch Am ericans of the
Coin Machine Industry. May the day soon
come when proper reco ~ nition, r espect and
admiration are bestowed upon an Industry
so gloriously entitled to this- yours, and my
Coin Machine Industry.

OCTOBER
1943
LOS ANGELES- M. S. Wolf celebrated
th e opening of th e Los An geles branch of
his California Amusement Co. at 1348
Venice Boulevard with an Open H ouse cele-
bration on Septemb er 24th a nd 25th at
whi ch he and his staff played hosts to th e
operators of Southern Californi a.
Those attending were surprised to see th e
cha nges wrought in the buildin g. Ne w til e
Aoors had been laid, the offices generally
remodeled, walls refini shed in pastel shades,
bea utiful furniture in all of th e pri va te
offices and heavy fri eze carpetin g. F luores-
cent fi xtures throughout bath ed th e show-
rooms, offi ces and servi ce depa rtments in a
soft, cool rosy light.
On ha nd to greet th e ope rators were M.
S. Wolf, own er ; C. M. Ga rton, bran ch
manager ; and M. E. Thi ede, salesma nager.
Food, consistin g of sandwi ches of va rious
kinds, sala ds, pickl es, olives, tomatoes, a nd
the like were on hand in tremendous qua n-
tities and on the refreshm ent side the well
stocked bar resembled a fi rst class liquor
store before the days of shortages. Needl ess
to say the opera tors enjoyed th emselves to
the utmost and many made th eir stop an
all-day visit and relu cta ntl y de parted when
closing time fin ally arrived.
In addition to a liberal a ttend a nce of
operators, jobbers a nd di stributors of Los
Angeles, vi sito rs were clo cked from P asa-
dena, San Diego, Sa nta An a , Bakersfi eld,
North H ollywood, Burbank, Colton, Rive r-
sid e, Glendale, Maywood, Flintridge, Ana-
heim, Lo ng Beach, Santa Barba ra, Oxn a rd ,

P a rk and was form ally opened in th e spring
with a party a t which President Ra bkin
was the host. Which means the one who
pa id fo r the drinks and food. The P ark
occupies an area of 10,000 square feet. It
is surround ed by a white p icket fence and
has an abundance of benches, easy cha irs,
metal garden loun ges a nd various s ports
faciliti es. Music is played durin g the lunch
hour through a loudspeaker. ( Mutosco pe
started using music to enhance morale and
accelera te production several years ago. A
system is now b ein g ins talled that will
carry mu sic to every part of the plant and
can be turn ed off at will. )
Mutoscope Victory Park is th e only rec-
rea tional a rea fostered by an industri al
plant in th e Borough of Qu eens. It is in -
teresting at lun chtime to observe employees
of plants th at completely s urround Muto-
sco pe and its grounds gazing .enviously at
Mutoscopers regaling themselves within
th e co nfines of the park, pitchin g horse-
shoes, play in g quoi ts, dancin g and sunnin g
themselves on co mfortable ch airs, divans
and benches. Mutoscope would have liked
to do somethin g about this-th at is, . make
a rra ngements for employees of other plants
to share th e use of the commodious s pace
- but War Depa rtm ent plant security regu-
lation s prohibit it.
About 40% of th e present personnel
were with Mutoscope before the war. This
is a hi gh p erce ntage co nsiderin g the fact
that women comp rise 50% of our present
personn el. In peacetime women were em-
ployed onl y in our offices. Our ex perience
with women in th e machin e shops as well
as precision assembly work has been ve ry
favora ble. We find th at th ey learn qui ckly:
tha t th ey enter eagerly into the spirit of
a war pl ant and th at most of th e bugaboos
th at were written about problems attendant
upon women in industry possess only aca-
demic interest for us. Maybe we have a
well-conducted P ersonn el Depa rtment to
th ank for thi s. Maybe it's just plain luck.
Wh atever th e cause, we are hap py about
women bein g added to our forces a nd we
shall kee p on a ddin g th em as lon g as we
ca n get them.
So th at's as mu ch as ca n be told about
how Mutoscope is farin g und er a war
economy. Mutosco pe is satisfi ed but not so
sati sfi ed th at it would wa nt th e war to last
one minute lon ger th an necessary. Muto-
scope is interested in winnin g the war. It
is eager to get bac k into civilian produc-
tion . We in Mutosco pe know that when
peace is here aga in we as well as those
with whom \ve do business will benefit
fro m our experi ence as a wa r pl a nt. Wh en
materi als ca n aga in be empl oyed for th e
ma nufacture of coi n machines we will bf'
even more effi cient beca use of skill s devel-
. oped in makin g precision parts and instru -
ments; we will have grea ter ca pacity be-
ca use of machine tools acquired for war
work and we are learnin g eve ry day th e
use of new ma terials and equipment th a t
will not be discarded wh en we are rein -
stall ed in th e coin busin ess.
Wh en th e time comes for us to do ff th e
habiliments of war , when all of us are
ready to resum e ou r places in the c ivili an
eco nomy, opera tors ' a nd jobbers · ca n be
certa in th a t more th a n ever before Muto-
scope will be equi pped to tu rn out wh at
it has been noted fo r th ese many years-
