MIAMI, Fla .- The local city coun cil has
ta ken the tax bu ll by th e horns and pio -
nee red a new type of coin·operated amuse-
ment tax that has met with an enthusiast ic
rece ption from local music operators.
On Octob er 1st music opera tors sta rted
applying for lice nse under th e new ordi-
na nce whi ch regulates the number of pho -
nogra phs on the ratio of one phonograph
to each 265 people in th e city.
Behind th e new licensing technique is
a lon g story of licensin g di scussions, trial
and error meth ods, and finally the success-
fu l method of li censin g on the basis of
population.
Operators sa w in th e proposa l a way of
protectin g their locations for rumors had
filt ered South of invasio ns of music op -
era to rs from the New England states ex-
pect in g to sca tter freely and b ask in th e
beautiful F lorida sunshine for the winter.
In establ ishin g a basic population the
city coun cil too k the census of 1940 with
no modification s althou gh the ci ty has had
a terrific popul ation in crease since then.
This means that the number of phonogra phs
that ca n be operated in the city is auto-
maticall y froz en until the new federal
'
census is taken in 1950.
Anoth er amendm ent to th e new ordinance

tion from $110 to $125.
New Plastic Adhesives
N EW YORK- Revolutionary new plas-
ti c adh es ives, to do the work of nails and
sc rews, weldin g, rivet in g and bind ing, will
be th e fo undation of a substan tial new in·
dustry after the wa r, accordi ng to Planning.
Goodyear Tire and Rubb er has perfected
a plastic adhesive that will bi nd metal to
metal, makin g a stronger joint than the
metal itself. Variations of the formu la give
the same bond between metal , wood, plas-
ti cs and othe r materials.
Chrysler Mo tors is developin g manufac·
turi ng uses for th ese adhesives
coa ting plywood wi th corrosion-proof metal s
for automob ile bodi es, kitch en equipment,
and walls a nd panels in buildings.
Th e U. S. Stoneware Co., Akron , 0 _, has
developed an adhesive to take the place
of riveting and spot welding.
Corning Glass Works is producin g one
to solder glass to metal, and glass to glass.
Precision blasting in miniature has de-
veloped so far in our war fa ctories that the
new ex plosive rivets which seal themselves
on th e bli nd side of a piece of work seem
desti ned for wide adaptation by ind ustry.
, Suds Shortage Hurts
F ORT WORT H - Warm weathe r and
"suds" just natu ra lly go together -. . . and
a cool " bucket of suds" means a game or
two on a marble table and a few tll nes
on the " pia no."
However, operators in th e~e parts have
literally " taken it on the chin" lately due
to the shortage of beer, which is declared
to be the worst of any state in the U nion_
Ma ny establishments, where coin-opera t·
. ed equi pment thr ives, have been closing as
ea rly as 7 p.m _ because of the shortage.
