Celebrates 11 Years
LOS ANGELES-M. S. Wolf, in co m·
pany with Mrs. Wolf and his brother, Ken·
neth and wife, left Los Angeles November
7th on a buying trip through the South·
west and Midwest in search of equipment
for the California offices. Reporting from
Chicago on November 16th, Bill said he
had been very successful in acquiring a
considerable quantity of machines and all
were being shipped to Los Angeles to be
offered to customers of the California
Amusement Co. "I'll be glad to get home,
too," Bill added, for it was snowing in Chi·
cago at the time. He is expected back on
the 25th.
During the past month a number of oper·
ators from all parts of the Southland have
visited the local offices and showrooms of
California Amusement. All were impressed
with the beautiful arrangement of offices
and showrooms and placed orders for
needed parts and equipment. Another de·
partment at California Amusement that
always wins the plaudits of operators is
the complete repair and service department
which is equipped to even turn out hard·
to· get parts which the factories can no Ion·
ger supply.
Sales have been particularly brisk duro
ing the month on the new Singing Towers,
according to Chet Garton and Max Thiede.
In fact a number of operators have placed
their second orders on the phonograph. An·
other substantial shipment of Singing Tow·
ers is enroute West, making the third large
shipment to be received here since the 10·
cal offices opened two months ago.

Laymon's A Beehive
LOS ANGELES- November 16th was a
big day for Jack Gutshall for it was eleven
years on the same date that Jack purchased
his firs t marble game from Sol Gottlieb and
started forth as a marble table operator.
"It was a funny old table," remembers
Jack. "I can't think of the name of it but
it had a high score hole at the bo ttom of
the playing field and when a ball dropped
into the hole a . lid closed. That was my
beginning. From those early days I've had
a bit of experience in every branch of the
business and for the past few years have
maintained a distributing organization cat·
ering to the needs of musi c operators."
THE REVIEW joins the industry in con·
gratulations on his first eleven years and
the hope he will be with us for many more
years to come.
Kaplan Has Parts
LOS ANGELES-To the well known slo·
gan of the Southwestern Vending Machine
Co.,- "No Deal Complete Unless You Are
Satisfied"-could rightly be added the ex·
pression " Name It- We Have It" for the
establishmen t is a veritable storehouse of
machines of all types, parts and supplies.
A visit to Southwestern will convince the
most skeptical that Harry Kaplan planned
ahead and saw to it that a large supply of
parts and supplies would be on hand at
Southwestern if a slfortage ever became
acute. Mountains of cartons and packing
cases filled with all types of parts and sup·
plies greet the operator as he walks
through the aisles at Southwestern.
In addition there is a terrific quantity of
machines of all types including one and
five ball marble games, cigarette machines,
arcade pieces, phonographs and almost any
type of equipment there might be a demand
for.
In this issue Kaplan lists a part of the
machines and parts and supplies he has
available for immediate delivery. We sug·
gest a visit to the establish ment for a more
revealing picture of just how Southwestern
has planned ahead to take care of its oper·
ator·customers.
LOS ANGELES-Any ~esemblance be-
tween the Grand Central Terminal and the
Paul A. Laymon establishment is not purely
co incidental for almost any day the Lay-
mon place of business is a veritable bee-
hive of activity with operators in from all
parts of the Southwest for equipment, parts
and supplies.
" Why before I even get equipment un-
packed and on the showroom floor it's going
out the back door into an operator's truck,"
said Paul and we were prone to agree after
spending fifteen minutes watching the ac·
tivity.
Laymon has done a grand job of helping
operators keep going since the outbreak of
the war and the terrific patronage he is
enjoying attests to the soundness of his
policy of keeping the boys supplied with
whatever they need at all times.
Spotted at Laymo 's during the past few
days picking up equipment were Charles
Peddicord, Anaheim; G. W. Tubbs, Compo
ton; Ray Smith, Barstow; Perry Irwin,
Ventura; W. T. Culley, Parker, Ariz.; H. A.
Presher, San Diego; C. L. Bandhauer,
Bishop; Joy Bradley, Ontario; W. H.
Shorey, San Bernardino; Glenn McCarter,
Hemet ; C. Rigdon, Fontana; Ted Bloomer,
Mojave; Ray Reynolds, Big Bear; to men·
tion only a few.
In add i'tion to the business he is enjoying
in the Southwest, Laymon is doing a nice
business in the Hawaiian Islands and with
modified restrictions he is shipping con-
siderable quanti ties of equipment to the
Islands, most of which will be used in
Officers' Clubs and Servicemen Canteens.
All in all, the Laymon spot is a very,
very busy place with equipment leaving
every few minutes for all parts east and
west . .
