opportunity to build good will with his loca-
tions today than he has had at any time in
the history of our industry. And, the intel-
ligent operator will take full advantage of
this chance to "cinch" himself with his
location owners and deeply root himself in
his spots for the great post-war era of
operating.
Today locations are fighting desperately
to stay in business. Shortages of all kinds
and types face small business men every
day. New merchandise is next to impos-
sible to obtain, the restaurant and cafe
owner is knee deep in red tape figuring his
points for rationed foods, tavern and bar
operators are fighting to get supplies to
keep going, and in every retail avenue
some almost unsurmountable problems are
'Continually popping up. Add to this the
manpower shortage and the higher salaries
being paid in war plants and you can par-
tially realize the pretty picture your loca-
tion owners look at .each day.
The operator has not had all "milk and
honey" either for he has had his shortages
and we all know the labor story too well
for repeating here. But here is where the
operator's big opportunity comes.
In making your service and collection
calls try to be as cheerful and optimistic
as possible. Instead of countering with a
"we can't get that anymore," or "don't you
know there's a war on?" when the location
owner asks for a particular machine, rec-
ord, etc., be as cooperative as possible. Ex-
plain that you have been trying desperately
to get just what he wants and you intend
not to let up for a minute, and as soon as
you can possibly obtain what he wants he
shall have it. Maintain this constant spirit
of understanding and cooperation and
you'll be surprised at the results it will ac-
complish.
Today too many salesmen and suppliers
are taking advantage of the location owner.
They assume the attitude that "you're lucky
if I let you have anything at all." A loca-
tion owner inwardly resents this manner of
treatment and you can bet your bottom dol-
lar that when open competition is again
established in a free world the suppliers
who are using these tactics on location
owners today will find themselves bounced
out of a lot of spots.
The smart opera tor will get on the other
side of the fence for the duration. Don't
let your location owner think for a minute
that he is lucky you'll let him have any
equipment at all. On the other hand slyly
bui ld up the facts in his mind that you're
really pleased to have the opportunity to in-
stall equipment in his spot, you enjoy do-
ing business with him, and you wouldn't
think of pulling out for any reason what-
soever. -
When the war is over and normal times
return, along with an avalanche of new
equipment, you'll find your locations faith-
ful to the end and never forgetting for a
moment your cheerful help, kind considera-

tion and cooperation in the months behind.
A little extra effort and the right frame of

the world of tomorrow.
Brennan Keeps Busy
SAN FRANCISCO-Even if new and
used equipment are not as plentiful as a few
months back Ernie Brennan, manager of
the local office of the General Music Co., is
not one to sit around and twiddle his
thumbs. Ernie .keeps on the jump helping
operator-customers with their various prob-
lems and in obtaining pieces and parts they
urgently need.
"Now, as never before, the jobber and
distributor can be of real service to the
customers who have so liberally patronized
them in the past," believes Ernie. "We
intend to stay right in there pitching until
the final victory, and helping our customers
in every way possible to keep their equip-
ment operating at its maximum earning
. power."
Moves to Larger Spot
HOLLYWOOD - Devie's, leading Cali-
fornia buyers of used phonograph records,
have moved their Hollywood store from
1615 Cahuenga Boulevard to larger quar-
ters at 1612 Cahuenga Boulevard.
Devie's advertise regularly in THE RE-
VIEW and as a result are able to keep huge
stocks of used recordings in their retail out-
let, purchased from automatic music opera-
tor subscribers to this publication.

Si: What makes you think so?
Pete: Because every woman in the sew-
