Dear Mr. Blackford:
This is my sixth week in this camp and
they' ve been extremely active weeks. This
is an entirely different army than I knew
in my other stations. Activity is stream·
lined and accelerated. In six weeks I fin·
ished one semester of the course which, in
a civilian school, would have taken six
months. Normally my mark of 95 would be
terrific. Here it's accepted as satisfactory.
My tent leader is in the final stages of
his training and is preparing for a boat
ride to Shangri·la or Berlin. He is a fine
example of the capability of our fellows
for he had no knowledge of the work in
which he is now an Expert prior to coming
into the service.
This past week our organization held a
special parade to honor a former camp
mate who had been awarded the distin·
guished service medal by President Roose·
velt. The soldier had been a Cpl. at the
time of earning the award, but prior to
the presentation made by a general, he
had received a commission.
Next time you see a soldier wi th shining
brass and buttons, give a thought to all
the arduous work and long ho urs he spent
in cleaning them. I know by personal ex·
perience how hard it is to satisfactorily
clean the metal buttons. In fact in the proc·
ess of learning exactly how to perfectly
polish them I spent so much time in the
kitchen on extra K.P. that I have house·

maid's knee, dish-pan hands, the tired feel-
ing that comes from leaning over the
kitchen sink too much and that appearance
which means one needs a rest. That was

the result of being "gigged" at two suc-
cessive inspections.
This country's weather is wonderful. Con-
tinual spells of what we laughingly call
"California dew." This "dew" darn near
floated our tent away last night. The power-
ful wind almost blew our tent away after '
we had securely anchored it against being
turned into a ship. Really fine training for
all-weather action.
November 19th marks my first anniver-
sary as a soldier. Never has a year passt so rapidly and it's been most interesting
too. But I still look forward to becoming
a record sales promoter, a civilian and
everything that it means. Army · life is
swell, important and the like, but there's
nothing like being home with family and
friends and I can't get there too quickly to
suit me.
All of which is why I and all service-
men "burn up" when we read about strikes
and the djfficulty of meeting bond sale
drive needs. We make no complaints ahout
the arduousness of army life and the heart-
aches of being absent from home, despite
"gripes" and "G.!." moans. But we do feel
angry at the lack of support which too
often seems apparent from the civilian side.
But I'm sure we'll all finally get together
and finish this job. It can't be too soon.
Private Harry Bortnick
