HOUSTON, Texas-The Houston opera·
tors' banquet and social meeting was held
on the evening of Feb. 4th at Southern
Select Beer warehouse. Operators Tom
Williams, Ernest Gates and Doc Clancy,
were hosts and treated the boys to a royal
feast of fried young turkey with the trim-
mings and, of course, a super-abundance of
Southern Select Beer.
An Internal Revenue Tax department
representative gave some worthy informa-
tion about national taxes. He explained the
Victory Tax in detail as applied to opera-
tors and their employees. Victory Tax for
operators is payable annually, he stated,
while employees of operators would have
their tax withheld each payday. Payday
might be weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly,
but no tax for less than one week should
be submitted. He also said an operator

was not required to withhold a tax on the
earnings of an employee who worked less
than one week; nor was he responsible for
any previous earnings of an employee.
"Red" Nelson, Southern Select sales rep·
resentative who has supervised the prepara-
tion and serving of more than a dozen swell
feeds for Houston operators the past two
years, was compelled to strike a sad note
during his usual informal welcoming speech
to the group. He said that because of food
rationing and as a patriotic duty, his com-
pany would, for the duration, discontinue
serving food at business or· social meetings.
He softened the blow some when he added
that the hall would always be open to op-
erators for meetings and enough beer handy
to wet half a hundred dry throats.

Cruse & Peacock, recently was married to
Lt. Joseph M. Lyon of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Two future "big butter and egg men" are
operators Fred McClure and Clyde Atkins.
They have bought a farm 12 miles outside
the city limits.
A long and cheerful letter was received
from H. M. Crowe, former manager of
R & A Distributing Co., and now in the
Navy. He is stationed on an island "some-
where close to where there's fighting."
Local operators are enjoying unusually
good business. Equipment and records are
scare and getting scarcer but so are men
to service the machines and change records
so things about balance up. Most operators
have all the business they can possibly look
after. Reports are exceptionally good on
phonographs and cigarette machines.
The distributors are making some nice
profit trading, repairing, and renovating old
equipment. Several have also taken on
other lines as stop gaps for the duration.
Several indoor penny arcades, two of
them large ones, have opened in the City
since Christmas. Most of the machines for
these places were moved from numerous
summer resorts along the gulf and from
Galveston. Much of that lucrative seashore
territory has been taken over by the Mili-
tary and will be out for the duration.
