This system allows him time enough to serv-
ice about four times the number of units
that he formerly did. Condition of equip-
ment is telephoned into the main office
and the mechanic works out of there. Wom-
en are employed to do the "odds and ends"
work now. Where formerly it was common
practice to have two change booths, one at
each entrance, Trippe's Arcades feature
one centrally located glamorized change
station. Whenever qualified women are un·
available for this job it is turned over to
a man who is up in years or physically
handicapped. You will always find several
youngsters around the service and repair
department at Ideal's main office being
broken in by the older mechanics. Ideal
has found that these youngsters help im-
measureably when working under the wing
of an older mechanic.
No New Equipment Problem
Another big problem that faced Trippe
was the shortage of new equipment. He
has solved this by establishing a first class
service and repair shop in the main office,
complete with every kind of mechanical de-
vice for repairing old broken down units
and staffed by a crew of first rate me-
chanics and their helpers. This shop is also
departmentalized; it consists of a paint
shop, electrical shop, parts replacement
storeroom, woodworking department and an
art work studio. A regular system has been
set up whereby each and every piece of
equipment is classified as to its location,
its condition and the history of its earning
ability. Each unit is studied closely for the
purpose of determininl( at what price play it
will operate most profitably. A new paint
job, a new playing field, or new art work
and decalcomanias with plenty of red, white
and blue have been found to do wonders
with a shopworn unit. In the rare cases
where a machine has been "condemned"·
each and every part is carefully salvaged
and put in stock for future repair work on
other equipment.
Selecting Locations
Another problem is determining what is
and what is not a suitable location for an
Arcade. The Ideal Novelty Co. makes it a
point to keep away from a spot that is
heavy with vehicular traffic and short on
pedestrian traffic. "We simply don't get
any business from people who whiz by in an
automobile," says Trippe. "We try to locate
near other amusement attractions, such as
recreation parks, roller rinks, theatres, and
any section that passes for 'a Gay White
Way.' That it is entirely possible to set up
an Arcade and have it draw from every
strata of society for its patronage has been
conclusively shown with the opening in
downtown St. Louis of a swank establish-
ment that has interior appointments and
architectural features that rival those of
the picture houses, cock tail lounges, and
recreation parlors in the neighborhood. The
Arcade occupies a store building fronting
on Sixth St., ' one of the most congested
thoroul(hfares in respect to foot traffic in
the city.
"This represents a desire on our part,'·
says Carl Trippe, "to attract customers from
every income group, just as the moving pic-
ture industry has done." The conviction
that Trippe felt about the way the public
would react to an Arcade that was given
a location at a heavy foot-traffic point and
equipped with completely modern features
has been proved entirely right by the
smartly dressed crowd that streams thru
the doors with no let up. So many fur-
coats, jewels, officer's uniforms are in evi:
dence that one day the cashier remarked
that it looked like the Veiled Prophet Ball
