Cig. Sales Huge
NEW YORK - Two hundred fifty-three
and a half billion ci garettes were sold last
year, according to production fi gures print-
ed in a recent issue of Printers Ink. Old
Gold gained 83 per cent in sales over 1939
fi gures, Lucky Strike got 25.3 per cent and
Ca mels 23.1 per cent of the total domestic
market. These two brands combined ac-
counted fo r almost one-half of the domestic
sales.
Leading the list was Lucky Strike with
a production of fifty-nine and a half billion
cigarettes. Camels was a close second with
production .of fi fty-four an d four-tenths bil-
lion. Chesterfield was third with Philip
Morris, Raleigh, Old Gold, P all Mall, Kool,
Avalon, Wings, Beachnut and Sensation,
Twenty-Grand, Herbert Tareyton, Domino,
Regents, P aul Jones, and Spuds following
in the order named.
A study of the production figures reveals
that the so-called ten cent brands are slip-
ping badly and that Pall Malls dominate
the "long" cigarette fi eld.
The article furth er stated that were it
not fo r the foresight of a few paper manu-
facturers there might be a shortage of cig-
arettes today for up to 1939 eighty·five per
cent of the cigarette paper was made in
F rance.

THE R. ;,F. VOGT
DISTRmUTORS
some one can 't prove that it's going to be used
in the next three-sell it-or scrap it! Scrap
and used equipment dealers pay well for use-
able machinery and materials.
It' s easy to salve your salvage cOl)science by
turning in the junk you' d been mea ning to get
rid of anyway. But this is not enough!
To end the shortage of he; vy steel scrap you 've
got to dig deeper. Mills are going to need
about 26,000,000 tons of purchased scrap this
year! To make sure that the men we 've sent
to war will have the weapons they need, you've
got to get rid of every piece of idl.,..}'slacker"
metal in your/lant. Sell it-either as scrap or
as second han equipment.
Can't Get Enough Copper
Shortest of all is copper, and officials say this
critical shortage will continue for the duration .
Copper refineries are not operating at full ca·
pacity . . . when they should be running wide
open! Who knows how long that one scarcity
may delay the final big push ?
Deduct Value From Your Income Tax
Remember . . . if the item you scrap still ap·
pears on your books, it can be deducted . Oth·
erwise it cannot. This is a matter for your
a ccountant or attorney to decide . Even if not
deductible, don' t hoard it. For used machinery
especially there's a big and continuing demand.
Somebody "eeds it-badly!
