nice bunch of pheasants at our feet, but
we found them and we had pheasant, roast-
ed, broiled, baked, in pie and hash and
half a dozen other ways for several days.
"This one (center, above) shows a string
of ducks I bagged at the Los Angeles Ath-
letic Club's range not far from Bakersfield.
A nice early morning's shooting. My two
dogs are experts on retrieving and were as
proud as I when the birds were strung up.
"This picture (bottom, above) shows it
doesn't take three men to get a nice bunch
of pheasants. I shot this fourteen up where
the snow is really deep in the Dakotas.
There's something mighty bracing about an
early morning takeoff across the prairie in
search of the elusive pheasant and when
one shows there's no time to play around
with your gun.
"Yes, indeed," Bud concluded, "those
were the days and their early return will
certainlv be welcomed by all of us."
To w'hich we nodded yes, gulped again
about the elephant picture, and sauntered
out of his inner sanctum sanctorum.

Parr Hopes for Early Return
of Pre-War Hunting Days
LOS ANGELES-"Those were the ~ood
old days," declared Bud Parr, head of Gen-
eral Music Co., Los Angeles and San Fran·
cisco, as this REVIEW reporter sat with him
in his Los Angeles office a day last week
and went over a group of hunting pictures
taken in various parts of the country. In
one picture was a flock of ducks. Next pic-
ture showed a record catch of fish; and the
third picture a beautiful assortment of
pheasants. On and on thtough the stack
we went and even found one of Bud astride
a dead elephant but a lump came in our
throat as we tried to mutter: "How, why,
when, where!"
"Yes," continued Bud, "those WERE
the good old days, but now our ammuni·
tion is needed for more important things
and it is my hope, as well as that of every
other man in this Industry, that before very
long the job will be finished once and f.or
all time.
"Look at this shot," Bud added. "This
one (top, above) was taken back in South
Dakota not far from Aberdeen. The two
other chaps are the United States Marshall
and the County Sheriff. It was a snappy
morning when we set out in search of that
NEW YORK- The Petrillo ban on re-
cordings has taken a new and most im-
portant turn. The electr ical transcription
companies have referred to the Conciliation
Service of the Department of Labor a de-
mand which makes the Petrillo dispute sig-
nificant not only to the broadcasting indus-
try but to the American citizen.
The latest demand of James C. Petrillo,
AFM prexy, on the transcription com·
panits is "that the manufacturers of tran-
scriptions agree that they will prevent
transcriptions from being used by any
person who does not em ploy a quota of
union musicians satisfactory to the A. F.
of M."
Translating this into terms of the sewing
machine, it means that no one should be
allowed to buy or use a sewing machine
commercially who does not employ a quota
of hand seamstresses satisfactory to a
union: in terms of the automobile, no one
should be allowed to use a truck who does
not support a quota of livery stable em-
ployees satisfactory to a union.
It is hoped that if conciliation fails,
the matter will be certified to the War
Labor Board for prompt attention. This
phase of th e Petrillo matters affects the
transcription industry only and not the
phonograph record industry.
On June 23 seven transcri ption firms
charged Petrillo had refused a Federal
Conciliation Service request to set a date
to meet with them. The charge was made
by A. Walter Socolow, attorney for the
companies involved.
The next move is up to the Government.
