WASHINGTON- The Commerce Depart-
ment has released its inform ati on as to th e
pre ent cigarette conditions and in an a rti-
cle in th e Department's monthl y magazine
decla res th at, America ns are smokin g bor-
rowed cigarettes for they' re being borrowed
from nex t yea r's supply and even from 1945
tobacco reserves.
Th e count ry is sharin g 42 per ce nt of its

WASHINGTON - Thou g h d oubtin g
wh ether furth er publi city on the cigarette
shortage would be of value, Charles E.
Gauge, chi ef, Tobacco Branch , War Food
Administration , has issued a declaration
th at "It ap pear to be a situation wh ere a
shortage of cigarettes has b een induced by
injudicious publicity, particul arly scare
headlines, some of whi ch employed such
term as 'Cigarette Famine,' e tc."
Gauge cited instan ces of small manufac-
turers of littl e known brands who had been
receiving order for ten times their normal
shipments, and r eported instan ces of indio
viduals going into stores and purcha sing
not mer ely carton but cases of cigarettes.
Unqu estionably, Gau ge declared, stocks
of tobacco, including the present year's
p roduction now being marketed , bear to
the total manufa cturing requirements a
lower relationshi p than is normal or even
comfortable, bu t the re certainly is no
cause for alarm.
" Our soldiers and ailors will continue
to be amply upplied with c igarettes," h e
asserted, "and I see no reason to assum e
that th e supplies for civil ians will be de·
creased. We shall not, however, be able to
indul ge in the luxury of stampeding the
tobacco stores and hoarding cigarette
against a po sibl e future famine. There
will be no famin e b eyond what we may
bring upon ou rselves by just such b e-
havior."

Hard 10 G el
Like so me ga ls we kn ow ( maybe you
know som e too ), cigarette are hard to get.
Afte r th e Holidays the prediction is that
th e s itu ation will soften a bit. Ca mels a nd
Old Golds ar e outstandin g in the ir ca rcity
-and it's hurtin g them-a lot of smokers
are chan ging over to othe r brands and a
goodly percentage of th em will not chan ge
back even wh en thin gs ease u p.
Smart Merchand is ing
As you probably realize, cigarette mak·
ers look on ve ndin g machin es with grea t
favor beca use of th e adverti sing va lue. Two
of th e major manufacturers a re exhibitin g
what we think i smart merchandi sin g in
giving vendors all the support th ey pos·
s ibly can. We refer to Chesterfi elds and
Lucki es. Tuck that in th e back of your
mind and give these two brands your sup·
port whol e heartedly in th e near fut ure
when a ll you need to buy cigarettes will be
mon ey without any salaamin g.
Two Hundred and N inety Bil/ion Th is Year
That's th e estimate for 1943 cigarette
production-a n increase of sli ghtly over
14% ove r 1942. Th e sho rtage on some
brands is greater than this in crease would
indi ca te. Looks like there's som ethin g
sc rewy som ewhere.
Advertising W ith In itials
The Government started this initial busi-
ness with WP A, PW A, OP A, ODT, etc.,
etc. Not a bad idea when one gets used to
it. Now Lucky Strike has started drumming
out the in itials LSMFT over th e air and
thus sa ying in a uniq ue mann er that L.S.
means fine toba cco.
Book Matches Now Advertised in Life
and Time
.During this war tim e wh en so much in
the way of merchandise is hard to buy we
have seen a lot of so-call ed " institutional
advertisin g." About the best of such pub-
licity, in our opinion, is the seri es just
started by Unive rsal Match portrayin g Th e
History of Fire. Their ads are appearin g in
Life, Tim e and a number of trade maga·
zines. In th e first of the series Universal
says in pa rt, "Yes, the book match is th e
indispensable companion to one of th e
greatest habits in th e world-smok ing."
That kind of publicity do es not hurt ven-
dors any, either.
The End Is Approaching
In th e "good old days" wh en you were
rollin g along at around fifty and you came
to a sign readin g " Kansas C ity- 110 mil es"
a nd K. C. was where you were heading for
- you could visualize th e end of your
journey in a reasonable tim e. All signs
today point to th e end of milita ry Ge rman y
in th e not too di stant futur e.
Offi cial Washington rightly does not
want us to think too much about the end
of Germany just yet but we do know that
it i comin g and with its comin g a lot of
thin gs in business will be d ifferent.
So, as cigarette vendors, let's continue
to keep ou r feet on th e ground a nd realize
th at competition will soon be kee n again
