KANSAS CITY
KANSAS CITY-More interest in ar-
cades spotlights the late spring coin ma-
chine news in the Missouri Valley area.
Almost ev.e ry other operator you meet has
some question to ask you about arcade
equipment.
Carl Hoelzel, United Amusement Coo's
owner, has just opened his new Wonder-
land, an arcade located on one of Kansas
City's heaviest traffic downtown corners-
12th & Grand.
Not only is the arcade located in one of
the most expensive rental buildings in the
downtown area, but its equipmen t consists
of the very newest types of arcade games.
Carl has spent some time in planning this
new unit which opened April 18th, having
made trips to Chicago and elsewhere in
search of "Just the units I wanted."
Like many other leading local operators,
Carl is convinced that the entertainment
field is now in the process of being remade
for the War Period. Among other important
factors which this reasoning believes will
result are: Persons will ride for . pleasure
less and take their recreation either close
to home or in areas easily reached by public
utility means of transportation. There is
and will continue to be more money to be .
spent in achieving this recreational end.
Downtown and business areas, such as trans-
fer points, will have their traffic greatly
increased while outlying districts and coun-
try spots have already shown a falling off
in patronage.
Thus most leading operator opinion points
out that the real day of arcades has ar-
rived; that the appeal of these amusement
type games is not limited to any specific
type of customer but has a broad appeal;
and that today, due to staggered hours,
there are no longer the· quiet hours between
peak periods of play, but good business for
16 hours of the day.
Local defense plan~s have and are en-
rolling many long-time coin machine men
in their ranks. The latest to join OPM
Chief Nelson's parade is Cliff Bryant. Cliff
is now with North American Aviation Co.
in Kansas City, Kansas. His brother, Bill
Bryant, is also back in town and has not
decided on future plans.
A check of coin machine receipts from
the cigarette vendors, as reported by local
operators, has taken a strong upturn in re-
cent weeks. "People are working harder
and smoking more," they beli'eve and stocks
of machines in reserve in the area is re-
ported "good". This is partially due to the
fact that machines that don't show the profit
expected from them are no longer being
left on location but being brought back into
the storeroom and put in reserve.
Music operators term their business
"quiet". Ac.cording to Finley Mason of
Central Distributing Co., "You couldn't say
that business is bad, it's just one of those
times when you sort of have to sit back
and wait for trends to develop." However,
the strong trend in the music operating
bracket is toward locations nearer heavily
populated areas.
Advertising and Sales Promotional Man-
ager Herman of Universal Manufacturing
Co. sends word along that his firm will
shortly introduce two or three new boards
built on war and baseball themes. Payouts
will be in cash and War Bonds. Featured
in th e new boards will be more art-work
tying into these themes. These hoards were
slated to be out some time ago, he said,
but the factory had to delay them to catch
up on orders. They're the candy box style.
Frank Buccero is now back part-time at
his desk at the Acme Amusement Co.
Following a mastoid operation, he was con-
fined to his bed for most of two months
and is to undergo further treatment in an
effort to restore his hearing.
Kansas operator Ivan Nelson, with one
eye cocked on his Draft Board, is planning
a May vacation to be spent at home "help-
ing" painters put a new face on his house.
And your local correspondent is also
awaiting word to take his "Physical".
