Liberty Records Stymied
HOLLYWOOD-Liberty Recording Corp.
formed here by Buddy DeSylva, Johnny
Mercer and Glenn Wallichs, will probably
not place their first recordings on the mar·
ket on June 1st as previously planned.
Government's curtailment of shellac has
thrown a monkey wrench in to the machin·
ery and as this issue went to press no
definite announcement was forthcoming
from Liberty's offices.
Among the bands which Liberty is re·
ported to have had ready to record were
Paul Whiteman, Bob Crosby, Ronnie Kern·
per and Freddy Slack. Bob Hope, Martha
Tilton and Mercer were also on the line for
early discings.
Music Catches Thief
NEW YORK - When a stick·up man
walked into a Brooklyn bar·room and an·
nounced he was taking over the spot's
cash he didn' t reckon with the Wired Music
unit installed there.
A soldier along side the box inserted a
nickel and informed the operator a stick·u p
was in progress. The operator called the
cops and then using the speaker in the unit
informed the gunman that he was "sur·
rounded ." Baffled the would·be bandit fled
-smack into the pudgy arms of the law.
Ko'bon In Army
NEW YORK-Bernard Kalban, publicity
and advertising director of Mills Music, has
joined the armed forces, He is succeeded
by Bernard Simon.
Robert and Paul Mills, sons of Irving
Mills, have entered the Marines. Paul has
been professional manager of the American
Academy of Music while Robert Mills has
been on the staff of Mills Music.
Miller On Vacation
OAKLAND - George A. Miller, State
President of the California Music Operators
Association, is taking a month's leave from
his office on advice of his doctors. Miller
has been particularly busy since the first
of the year and had a mon th long siege in
th e hospi tal so he was ordered to take
a month off and enjoy a good rest.
