ST: LOUIS mC)-The Associated Phon-
ograph Owners of St. Louis held an
open meeting, March 3rd, at the DeSoto
Hotel in downtown St. Louis. All phono-
graph operators in the area were invited to
attend this meeting irrespective of member-
ship in the Associa tion. There was a short
business meeting after which the boys
talked shop with their fellow coinmen. A
buffet lunch and refreshments were served
and tables provided for those wishing to
play cards.
An announcement was made concerning
the abolishment of the office of executive
manager, a post held by genial Ed Fisher,
and the closing of the Associatiori's office at
1536 Market St. This new arrangement is
designed to cut overhead expenses to a
minimum thereby enabling the group to
reduce their label charge to five cents per
phonograph, per month. This revenue is
estimated to be sufficient to pay the Asso-
ciati'on's monthly expense. All phonograph
operators will be invited to all future meet-
ings irrespective of membership. It was also
announced that any delinquent member of
the industry will be accepted into the As-
sociation by buying March labels.
The general theme of the speakers at the
m€eting was that in the present national
emergency they felt the necessity of close
cooperation among coin men , a close coop-
eration that all industries are striving for ,

turned out for this important event and the
cooperaU'Ve . spirit shown.
Carl Trippe, Ideal Novelty Co. head,
opened a new Arcade on one of the busiest
shopping streets in downtown St. Louis on
Saturday, February 28. It is at 811 Wash-
ington Ave. and occupies a store that the
former occupant spent $40,000 to remodel.
It is of modern design, spacious, well
lighted and air conditioned. Trippe chose
noontime on a Saturday to have the grand
opening and was well rewarded by the
patronage of the thousands of out-of-town
visi tors and soldiers on furlough from Fort
Leonard Wood and nearby Scott Field.
There was a continuous crowd in the es-
tablishment from the time of the opening
until the early hours of Sunday morning
when Carl laughingly said he had to "chase
them home" .
Hubert Burnett, aee serviceman of the
McCall Novelty Co. was shaken up when
his car ploughed into a snowdrift in Feb-
ruary. He is back on the job none the worse
for the experience. Dan Baum who until
recently spent his full time operating a
string of drink vendors has gone tQ work
for the Ideal Roller Rink and Amusement
Co. More St. Louis area coinmen to go to
the defense of Our Country are: W. J.
Hartwig of Ideal, Art Paulle, popular route
manager and Jack Rose. Hartwig is in the
Army. And Rose and Paulle are in the
Navy.
More attention is being paid by opera-
tors and distributors alike to the service
departments of their business. They have
come to feel that this is the wisest and
sometimes the only way to have machines
in good running order on location. Con·
sequently in contrast to policies of ordering
a new one at the drop of the hat they
tackled the problem from a new angle
when something is in disrepair and turn it
over to their enlarged service department.
