REMEMBER PEARL BARBOR
ployed the previous year. Farm income
reached a 20·year peak, volume of imports
and exports remained constant.
Construction was maintained at a high
level (due jointly to need for new defense
plants and new housi'ng for defense work·
ers), the steel industry remained at ca·
pacity, automobile . production, up to the
point of its total suspension, reached nearly
the peak year of 1929. Commodity prices
were rising slowly, with price control
needed rathe.r obviously. Security prices
ranged downward to some extent.
That's the picture as of January, 1942.
It may not be pretty, and it may be baffling
in more way than one. But no one can
•
deny that it is interesting!

JANUARY
1942
FT. MYERS, Fla.-Police Chief Charles
S. Moore found several Royal Air Force
cadets taking turns putting nickels and
pennies in the parking meters along Broad·
way.
"You're wasting your time, boys," he
told them. "You only get credit for one
hour at a time." The chief explained the
mechanism and how the meters help to
solve congested parking problems.
"We wondered why it didn't payoff,"
one of the British youths replied. "We
thought it was an American gambling de·
vice."

Baker in New Offices
CHICAGO-H. L. "Hal" I\aker, head of
Baker Novelty Co., is now occupying smart
new offices which extend clear across the
front of the buildi ng in which his factory
utilizes two full floors. A preview of the
new quarters showed them to be richly im·
pressive, modern, and planned for maximum
efficiency and comfort. The same look· in
revealed a surprising number of employees
at work, and indicated a heavy production
schedule.
