Nathanson to Open
In Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES - William Nathanson,
well known for a number of years in local
coin machine circles, announced on Janu-
ary 1st that he will soon open a large estab-
lishment in Los Angeles to supply the
music men of the West with something
drastically new and much ' needed under
present conditions_
Said Nathanson: "Even though the world
is at war a bright operating future lies
ahead of today's music operator if he is
given the right kind of co-operation by his
suppliers_ In returning to the distributing
field in Los Angeles I know that I have just
that item and within the next six weeks I
will announce my address and the product
I have to offer."
For the past two years Nathanson has
been in Mexico City representing outstand-
ing American phonograph manufacturers in
the Republic.

Jitterbug Sum
Makes Debut
LOS ANGELES-Acclaimed by local Ar-
cade men as the biggest "come-on" flash
ever used in front of Arcade spots, Jitter-
bug Sam, a product of E. L. Hearn, is now
being offered to the music operators of the
country.
Jitterbug Sam is something entirely new.
Sam is a miniature manikin, mounted atop
a refinished Wurlitzer 412 and upon insert-
ion of a coin Sam dances to the musical
accompaniment. Ingeniously timed Sam has
literally stopped them in their tracks on
test spots in Los Angeles during the past
three months and what is even more in-
teresting, holds the attention of the public
and gets constant repeat play.
Hearn advises that he is now in limited
production and is able to supply Jitterbug
Sam machines immediately.

Advertising Records
Again Rear Beads
CHICAGO - As long ago as 1937 and
1938 music operators received proposals
that they use records, supplied free, con-
taining advertising for a commercial prod-
uct. Actively considered but discarded ' at
the time, the proposal is currently being
renewed.
C. S. Darling, secretary of the Auto -
matic Phonog(aph Manufacturers Assn.,
points out a number of the undesirable
results which might follow the use of such
records. First, asserts Darling, the auto-
matic phonograph is recognized as the me-
dium for providing high-grade musical en-
tertainment to millions of people. It is not
an advertising medium, and any effort to
make it one would quickly destroy its serv-
ice to the nation as a source of entertain-

Reports have also been rampant to the
effect that Paramount and Republic are
planning "juke-box epics." 'Publicity de-
partments at the two latter studios say they
know nothi'n g about any such plans. We
hope it's true, what they say. We've always

ment and relaxation, and probably would
destroy the automatic phonograph industry
as well.
When a person puts his nickel into an
automatic phonograph he is entitled to his
money's worth in musical entertainment.
Any eH:ort to include advertising blurbs
will be resented, and the resentment may
be against both the phonograph and the
product which it attempts to advertise.
Reports from many operators in various
parts of the country indicate a vigorous pro-
test against this practice. Darling requests
that when any such offers of free records
come to the attention of operators, the
facts be reported to his office.
