Percy Shields really tasted heat when he
made a delivery of Arcade Equipment down
Indio way the last week in July. With 110
in the shade Percy had a tire go out on his
trailer and it practically ditched him.
After spending a full month at Big Bear
Jack Gutshall believes he's discovered how
to get the limit of trout without wasting too
much time. Jack invited his secretary, Jane
Carico, to accompany him and the missus
on a fishing trip at Big Bear recently. Jane
didn' t expect to fish, but when she saw how
exquisitely her employer handled his rod
and reel, she asked for a fishing pole of her
own. Jack quickly accommodated, and
almost as quickly a game warden came by,
questioned the party, made threats, raised
hell and J ack went into action. Jane quickly
acquired a fishing license, and as night fell
. . . ALL WAS WELL.
Lucille Laymon h as enlisted for Canteen
Duty for the American Red Cross.
G. M. O'Dell, R adium Springs, New Mex-
ico, visited THE REVIEW on August 10th,
and commented on the activity at Radium
Springs. O'Dell is the major-domo of the
town and owns the )lOtel, swimming pool,
and most of the stores. At present, he
states, invalids from all parts of the nation
are finding the curative waters of Radium
Springs very benefici'iiL As a result, O'Dell's
coin-operated equipment is getti ng a good
play.
Glen Wallichs, g. m. of Capitol Records,
returned to Hollywood on th e 1st, excited
over the reception given Capitol's first two
releases from here to the eastern coast.
Russell Smith, head-man at the L. A.
office of California Simplex, is back from a
month's trip to Chicago. Russell got a taste
of hot weather when he fished in Northern
Minnesota on the way home. Russell is cur-
rently whispering about the new Wurlitzer
replacement cabinet.
Arcade Boss Murphy, who has the Ar-
cade at Crestline in the San Bernardino
Mountains, and is about ready to open a
new Arcade in the Imperial Valley, was in
Los Angeles late in July to buy equipment
from Percy Shields, and others, for his new
spots.
J. A. Ewing, Bakersfield, is back from a
trip to Washington, D. c., and New York
City.
'c. C. Goodson, one of the old-timers in
the coin machine business, was in from
Pasadena talking over the good old days
with Paul Laymon.
Marvin Jones, son of Roy Jones, well·
known music operator, is an air cadet at
Santa Ana Air Base.
Nelson Baker, former service man for
Paul A. Laymon, is in training at Shepherd
Field, Texas. Nelson is in the Technical
Ground Training School.
Frank Richards, floor salesman for Gen-
eral Music, can tell 'em taller than anyone
we've ever encountered. For example Frank
said he was fishing for Bonita and the fish
were so thick he couldn't row his boat.
AND to top that-Frank tells of a fishing
excursion in Alaska where the trout were
so plentiful that you could Ji'ft them out of
the water in your own skillet. All of which
moves us to nominate Said Richards for
membership in the Burlington (Wis. ) Liars'
Club. We think Richards will fare well on
honors.
Robert Fairchild is now in training at
San Diego for service in the Navy.
A. S. Beutler, of the Laymon firm, is
back from the High Sierras with pictures
to prove he really did get what others talk
about.
William Rowe, Phoenix, Ariz., picked
July as a good time to come West and pick
up equipment.

Shelley Surprised
LOS ANGELES-During the first week
of August a very bewildered individual,
none other than Mr. Shelley of Shelley
Radio Co., 'phoned THE REVIEW and said:
"My goodness where does your magazine
really go? I'm getting tube orders from all
over the United States!"
Shelley apparently didn't know that THE
REVIEW has the blue ribbon subscription
list of operators in the industry from coast·
to·coast. Even though his tube supplying
business must necessarily be confined to
serving Music Men in the Western Area
during the war months Shelley is apprecia·
tive of the national interest and hopes to
be able to supply these customers at an
early date.
