ST. LOUIS, Mo.- Opinions poll'ed among
members of the coin machine industry in
this area have poi"nted to an overwhelming
favorable assent to the new set up inaugu-
rated recently, providing for the telescoping
of the regular monthly meetings of the
Asso ciated Phonograph Owners of St. Louis
and the Missouri Amusement Machine As-
sociation. The identity of interests of the
two groups along with the fact that a con-
siderable number of St. Louis operators
hold membership in both organizations
makes the new arran gement entirely logical.
Th e first hour of the meeting is used to
conduct all business relevant to the phono-
graph side of the industry and the next
hour is given over to the transaction of
business pertaining to pintables and other
coin operated equipment. When these two

for two ni ghts a month for meetings. Under
this new system all th e business can be
transacted and information exchanged
among members of the entire industry on
the one meeting night. Hot weather and th e
lack of any business of an emergency na-
ture caused the postponement of the meet-
ing that was scheduled for late July . . .
a ttesting to the smoothness th at has char-
acterized coin machine circles here lately.
Operators and distributors of this area
in ever increasing numbers ar e turning to
the reconditioning of equipment in an effort
to prevent loss of revenue that inevitably
r esults when an inj ection of new interests
is not provided by new models. They are
bein g constantly surprise d at the marvelous
transform ation that takes place when a
piece of equipment is expressly recon-
ditioned. One firm h ere sends pintables
back to the factory fo r remod eling in
twenty-five unit batches and in a short time
has this amount of equipment looking and
operating like brand new.
Take phonograph r emodelin g .. . . Bill
Betz of the W-B Novelty Co. has set up a
service shop that makes an old model
phono graph look like a million dollars. He
has one department that specializes in paint
. jobs. Using the best of materials and tools
this department turns out an average of
on e a day providing locations with new life
with the installation of one of these re-
worked models. The marked success en-
joyed by the above mentioned firms with
their aggressive reconditioning plans points
the way for others who have been debating
the relative merits of r emodeling and re-
conditioning old equipment.
Arcade management is occu pying a place
in the spotlight these days with th e opening
in widely scattered sections of th e city of
three new ar cades. One is located on Nor th
Grand Boulevard, one is downtown in the
heart of the business district and th e other,
the most pretentious of the three, is at
Delmar and De Balivere. This latter is op·
erated by Harry Davies of the Davies Nov-
elty Co. and draws from a thickly populated
section known as the Wes t End. The arcade
has over 150 pieces of equipment besides a
shooting gallery and is so arranged into
departments that its general appearance is
both striking and inviting. All nickel ma-
chines are set for two cent play, guns are
two cent play and pin games are set at one
cent without replays. Since its openin g re-
cently this arcade has done a very satisfa c-
tory business and Davies is well sa tisfi ed
with the move his firm has made.
Jack Nelson, general manager of Rock-
Ola, visited in St. Louis and southern
Illinois recently calling upon operators and
distributors and generally kee ping in con-
tact with the trade.

struck Earl Bowman of the McCall Novelty
Co. recently. His wife was driving the fam·
ily car from California and when she was
going through Colorado it happened. The
thief took three of the tires, the best three,
leaving Mrs. Bowman with two worn shoes
to go home on. After shelling out for re-
placements Mrs. Bowman remarked that
she sure would like to see justice done.
Earl grinningly remarked, "They used to
hang a man out West in the good old days
for stealing a person's transportation_"
Virgil 1. Bernsen postcards regularly to
his old bunch at Davies Novelty Co. telling
about army' life. Virgil who has been in
service for more than a year wrote that he
would like a few rounds of golf and a few
rounds of 'Bud', there being a seeming
shortage of these two activities around Fort
Sill where he is stationed.

Post Likened To Sears
CHICAGO-Always a popular gathering
place for operators, the world famous Buck-
ley headquarters now might be called a
1942 model of the old cross roads days
when the Trading Post was the center of
activity for the pioneers.
The launching of Buckley Trading Post
at 4231 W. Lake Street, Chicago, has given
to the operating fraternity the first all-
coverage machine and supply service this
industry has known.
Discussing the rapid growth of the Trad-
ing Post with P. J. Buckley, founder, some
interesting sidelights on" coin machine serv-
ice were brought out.
"A Trading Post always is associated with
pioneers and since our organization has pio-
neered some of the operators' biggest suc-
cesses we felt the homely atmosphere of the
Old Trading Post would appeal to them.
" We also felt," Buckley went on to say,
"that something more than just a jobbing
service was needed. Most every operator,.
large or small, always has something he
would like to sell, or trade. So, with a
trading post it was possible to help oper-
ators pass on their good workable machines
to others while being able to obtain what-
ever machines they needed on their own
routes.
"Another point we were careful to build
around was economy in buying. With the
war time scarcity of machines we knew
that machines would be in big demand and
prices considerably higher. In order to help
equalize th e price level the Trading Post
makes it possible to exchange machines
between buyer and seller without the bur-
den of extra shipping charges which the
jobber has to add on to his price when he
stocks machines.
"While thousands of machines on our
lists will never pass through a third hand
in the exchange because we hook up buyer
and seller, nevertheless, we have provided
one of the largest and most complete stocks
everyone's got c:r nickel for

operators, just as it did us; it has revived
some of the real old-time machines. Re-
quests for certain long-forgotten money-
makers have come through, and at the same
time some of these old machines have
bobbed up ready for their buyers.
"This week we are introducing our full
line of machines, after months of careful
survey of supplies all over the country. Its
completeness has been a surprise to most
operators.

our layout for the first time, since priorities
stopped production, 'You're the Sears-Roe-
