LOS ANGELES - No complaints from

Vacations are still the "talk of the hour."

Big Bear catching th e big fi h, or did he?

itor Corp. in Detroi t, flew in on July 21 to
look over th e machines being manufactured
in th e West. Satisfied with two or three he
picked up, Langley TWA'd back Ea t.
Mo.lly S imo.n , assistant to "Curley" Rob ·
inson, AOLAC managing director, is sport·
ing a stunning tan which he received on
her vacation trip spent up at Murietta Hot
Springs. Molly was up th ere for two weeks
and came back feeling fit as the proverbial
fiddle.
A new face in the AOLAC offices is that
of Virginia Co.o.per, who has joined th e
office staff to take the place of Shirley
Knell when she checks out to become Mrs.
Daniel Stevens.
Charterin g boats for fishing parties is
becoming quite the thing to do. Jack
Gutshall of Esquire Music i one of the
regulars. On July 13 he took his entire staff
a nd th eir wives on a trip to Ca talina. The
same gro up , minus those who " went under"
on seasickness, did the whole thing over
again on July 27. "Gray Dawn" is the boat
th e lads 1 ike best.
Do.n Graves, personable service man for
Harmony Hostess in Pasadena, is glad to be
hack on the job after a five·month stint in
the Army. Don was at San Luis Obispo.
One of the busiest trucks of any operator
in the southern tip of Cal ifornia is that of
Kenneth Wo.lfe in San Diego. With the
Navy on tap and thousands at Camp Callan
the purveyors of amusements in the San
Diego area are finding ample opportuniti es
for installing new equipment. So busy are
the lads that they cannot find time to visit
the 1. A. jobbers in search of new equip-
ment, so instead the jobbers are goi ng south
to visit th em.
"To.ny" Parina, L. A. manager for R. A.
Parina & Co., left on July 24 with his fam-
ily for a short vacation jaunt to San Fran-
cisco. Returning, "Tony" will bring down
his boat and anchor it at Lake Arrowhead.
V. E. MacCarter, former San Francisco
operator now lo cated in Paso Robles, is
opening a large Penny Arcade to amuse the
soldi ers in that area. Before en tering the
coi n machine business, MacCarter used to
be a linotype operator.
A number of localites journeyed to San
Francisco for the opening of the Jack R.
Moore offices on August 2. All reported

Trojan Novelty at 1813 West Pico, headed
up by Fred Gaunt, is really a bu y spot
PROTECTION
No one is safe from the depredations of
the spooner. His visits are more to be
fea re d than those of the night prowler.
The prowler may wake you up, but you
don't know about the spooner until you
look in the cash box.
Our proven No Spoon-No Spill Lip serves a
double purpose. It gives added conven-
ience to the player and discourages the
spooner no end.
We install this double purpose lip FREE
with overhaul or refinish iobs.

his new Buick.
The four-and-a-half-year-old son of P a ul
Simone, serviceman for Esquire Music,
was operated on for appendicitis July 20.
Doing okeh now.
When Victor McLaglen's "Light Horse
Cavalry and Motorcycle Riders visited San
Diego on July 26 the best promotion of the
event was through the RCA Sound Sy tern
supplied by Geor ge Buc kn a m of the
Bucknam Distributing Co., whose trucks
patrolled the main streets.
Les Lo rde n has added the fi lm business
to hi many other activi ties. Les stocks all
the new stuff and can whip up any kind of
a movie program a movie operator might
like. Rents are mighty reasonable too.
Ar ch C. Riddell, the Harmony Hostess
prexy, and Don Gr aves, serviceman, fig.
ured in a car spill in 1. A. on July 22. An-
other car hit them midship, throwing their
car onto the lawn and against a palm tree.
Neither was injured.
Mrs. C. A. Bla ke, her sister-in-law, and
C. A., Jr., left July 7 for the East in Mrs.
Blake's new maroon-colored Buick and
landed in Winstom-Salem, N. c., July 12.
They expect to visit for a month.
J o hnn y Ruggie ro, of Jack R. Moore's
San Francisco office, arrived here July 18
for a few days.
R ay Jon es, music opera tor, will leave
shortly for the East to pick up two new cars
in Detroit. That's the way western opera tors
are doing it nowadays. It used to be one
car; now it's two.
R ay E b erts, music merchant, has just
returned from a two-week jaunt through
British Columbia and Western Canada.
From all appearances Ray had a swell time.
How'd the Canadia ns like the new ties,

Baker and Evans in Chicago and conferred
wi th Holl y in De troit. Evans appointed him

resting up and getting ready for another
busy season along about October 15 at
Twenty- ine Palms. Walter owns a beauti-
ful home down there and it is not uncom-
mon for half a dozen coinfolks to drop in
on him any week·end during the winter
months and partake of the famous Gaunt
hospitality. Herb McClellan, Joe Richarme
and Jack Gut hall are three of Gaunt's best
local hospitality salesmen.
Mr. and Mrs. Gen e C rowley spent their

" Californ ia, here I come," says Hank Maser, Jennings' special factory representative , as he
prepares to travel the W est Coast for Jennings. He is explaining Californ ia climate and scenic
beauty to Leo J. Ke lly , Jennings ' vice-president. (California Chamber of Commerce please note)
reads like the blue book of coin machine
operating in the West. It is not u ncommon
for operators to ship machines several hun-
dred mi les for a Graham refinish ing job.
An ardent believer in advertising, Gra·
ham has not missed an issue of THE RE·

a fair portion of his rapid ly increasing
business to the effectiveness of hi adver-
