Coin Machine Review (& Pacific ...)

Issue: 1940 July

It all happen so fast I cannot even reach
the wheel before he hit.
"The force of that blow was terrible; it
knocked me flat an' I thought for a moment
that the Esmeralda would turn over but she
only stagger an' wallow an' there is a terri-
ble threshing around where Scarback has
driven his big sword right through the
planking below the water line. Then a
plank goes an' there is a hole big enough
for one's body to go through in the poor
old Esmeralda an' the water she pours in
fast.
"We are close to Todos Santos an' I
manage to get into shallow water before the
Esmeralda fills an' sinks. I swim the rest of
the way an' put up with a lobster fisherman
on the islands until a boat comes to bring
heem supplies an' it takes me off.
"Manuel, he lose his life; me, I lose my
boat, my fishing gear, everything.
"Do you wonder, Senor, that I keep away

from the Espada?"

Bally Holds
Summer Show
Frequent Wins Spell
Game Success
CHICAGO-As distributors from all sec-
tfons of the country boarded trains and
planes for home, after a four-day conven-
tion at the Bally Mfg. company factory,
Ray Moloney, Bally president, revealed
that his company has geared up for in-
tense activity throughout the summer.
"Whoever thinks we are due for a so-
called summer lull," Moloney said, "should
have seen the enthusiasm of Bally distri-
butors who spent June 26-29 looking over
the new Bally line. And that enthusiasm
was expressed, not only in words, but in a
tremendous volume of orders.
"Bally's Mid-Summer Show, by the way,
was probably the biggest event of its kind
ever held in the amusement machine busi-
ness. Walls were torn out, and three large
offices turned into one huge display hall.
This was decorated with flags and pen-
nants, and, then packed with machines.
And I use the word "packed" advisedly-
because, when we got the complete Bally
line into the room, it certainly looked like
the Exhibition Hall at the Sherman Hotel.
"First and foremost, there was Baily's
Rapid Fire Ray-Gun-with a sub-machine
type gun that fires at the rate of 100 shots
in 15 seconds, the target being a sub•
marine which dives under water, bobs up
again and darts back and forth on a 'high.
seas' depth-stage flashing with bursting
bombs, cannon and power dives. Distribu-
tors were unanimous in hailing Rapid Fire
as the greatest skill-gun ever created.
"Other Bally machines in the display
included the new 24-selection Bally Wall
Box, which aroused exceptional interest;
and the Vibro-Pep foot-relief machine. Big
volumes of orders were booked on both
machines.
"In the novelty field alone, five new
machines were shown; Lead-Off with base-
ball appeal; Limelight with the new 'Hop-
Lite' Bumpers; Fleet, featuring a new can•
non-fire action; Vacatfon and Duet.
"Two machines which held crowds
twenty hours a day were the Bally Circus
free-play bell with mint vendor, and Reel
Dice with a 7-selection coin-chute which
permits the player to play any combination
on a standard dice lay-down.
"Also shown, of course, was Royal Draw
the console bell that plays draw poker
according to Hoyle and i'ts free-play :com-
panion, High-Hand. Payout operators also
had an opportunity to see the newest Bally
pay-table, Santa Anita, which in addition
to the regular 4-multiple payout and $45
top feature also has a special, which
awards from $3.00 to $10.00 in silver
dollars.
"Maybe I've missed some of the many
new Bally hits on display, but I know the
distributors didn't miss any. The order
books prove that they saw them all-and
also proves that every one of the new Bally
games is a stand-out hit."

CHICAGO-"A game must be fun to
play to be a success," state Groetchen
officials in talking about the wonderful re-
ception which has been accorded their
Liberty Token Payout Bell.
"When we designed Liberty Bell we set
out to give the player a game which would
afford him a greater measure of fun and
amusement than heretofore, and that of
course meant more frequent wins.
"With our system of automatic token
payout on winners, combined with a 'mys-
tery award system' it became possible to
gi've the player frequent awards to keep
his appetite stimulated, and at the same
time achieve a wide range of payouts, rang-
ing from 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 or 50 free plays.
"By fixing the frequency of payouts, yet
leaving to the operator the discretion of
determining the value of such payouts,
players are assured of a full measure of
amusement and operators can determine
the percentage of awards best suited for
their territory and for maximum returns.
"In closed or difficult territories our
'Discreet Model' is finding daily wider ap-
plication. Award token, on winners, is dis-
played behind window, from where it is
pushed into cash box after storekeeper has
made the award, giving the operator a
perfect check-up on payouts at collection
