First CMI Annual Picnic Is
Terrific Hit in Chicago
CHICAGO-Over 13,000 people, repre-
senting every branch of the coin machine
industry, were in attendance at the first
annual picnic held at Riverview Park in
Chicago on Saturday, July 20th. Everyone
voted the affair a complete and solid suc-
cess.
Homer E. Capehart, For t Wayne manu-
facturer who has just announced his re-
entry into th e industry, was the speaker of
th e day and stressed the willingness of the
coin machine industry to aid in national
preparedness. Capehart call ed attention to
the fact that the coin machine business has
trained more than 100,000 workers in mass
production methods over the last 10 years.
Followi'ng the talk members of the in
dustry, in a message to the rearmam 0nt
advisory board in Washin gton, pledged their
skills to the nation's defense program.
At th e conclusion of Capehart's talk th e
huge crowd was entertained from a s tage in
the center of th e picnic grounds where out-
standing vaudeville acts presented 11. lengthy
performance.
The afternoon was given over to races
and competitions of various kinds-Jor large
and small. Suitable prizes were awarded in
each event. Refreshm ents were avai lable
and all rides in th e grounds were at cut
prices for the children of members of th e
industry.
Given away as ga te prizes were ten high
quality portable radios. Lucky wi'nners
were: Loraine Yates, of Bally; Tom John-
son, of Genco; Tom Means, of Groetchen;
John La Mont, of Advance Aluminum;
Joseph Cygan, of Advertising Posters;
Abner Snell, of Exhibit Supply; Ed Zager,
of Groetchen; Lillian Brankin, of Rock-
Ola ; and W. Smerlin.
