A Visit Thru
House of Mechanical Magic
The murmur started last fall,
when opera.tors began asking
about the WORLIYS SE~S.
T hen a rumble. Now a roar.
Like a snowball rolling down hill,
it swells bigger and bigger. Gains
more momentum.
It's the voice of ten thousand
and one operators and jobbers in
all parts of the United States.
It comes from the deep plush
seats of the lounge cars as two
distributors talk of the WORLD'S
SERIES contract they've just
made. From down Texas w a y,
where the boys play them high,
wide and handsome. From Bos-
ton, New York, San Francisco,
voices demanding, insisting, plead-
ing.

G ian t
punch presses pound with a ter-
rific r oar. High speed drills spin
at a dizzy pace, biting into shiny
steel until it smokes wth heat.
From what appears to be tangled
odds and ends of steel and wire
and assorted bits of WOOd, games
spring up like magic under the
skilled craftsmanship of trained
workmen.
The bustle of the Assembly De-
partment amazes, the visitor.
Here the games streak along

themselves as a busy maD hur-

clothes.
Dodging behind a door to es-
cape a rumbling kuck loaded
with stampings, the v isitor gains
the stairway with the help of &
guide. As though from the bow-
els of the earth, a deep rumbling
r each es his ears. In surprised
curiosity, we ask, "What's t hat?"
"Wait, 1"11 show you a sight
that will interest you," the guide
smiles. And we proceed down-
ward. A steel door, hermetically
sealed f or soundproofing, bares
our way. We enter and there
st retching down a long corridor,
are rows of enorm ous p resses.
It's past description. Only can
t h eir pounding r oar be likened to
a battery of big: Berthas hurling
two hundred pound projectiles
with the r apidity of machine gun
fire.
Number threes, number

as 3600 a minute!
So terrific is their force that
in two minutes they could ham-
mer "' through an ordinary floor.
But this is a special floor sup-
ported by steel girders, steel col-
umns, as thick as oaks and rein-
forced with concrete.
As we leave, the throaty rum-

follow along as th9ugh to remind
us of their might. We need no
such reminders, as we have seen

impress ODe until f leets of trucks
line up at the loading platforms.
Then gangs of leaders, sturdy as

has made America famous. It is
no spindly legged Child, but a f ull

the thousands of 0 per a tor s
throughout the country going
about their daily work, making
calls on locations, emptying cash
boxes, putting in new machines.
He sees location owners who
consider their games as much a
part of their store as the stock

enjoying a wholesome form of

So far the games have beell; 're-
by the authorities" as
games of amusement or of skill
and science. No official ruling
has been made on the question
whether the "free games" feature
constitutes gambling, though it is
understood that 0 n e 0 f the
branches of the city's legal forces
is looking into this matter. In
the matter of betting on the
scores, the authorities say noth-
ing can be done, since any game
could be so used for gambling
purposes .
Handlers of the games say t1;lat
in the downtown district in good
locations each device will take in
about $6 per day. Some run much
higher.
The proprietor of the
store and the leasor or owner of
the machine usually split the re-
ceipts fifty-fifty. Out of the pro-
ceeds, however, must be taken the
cost of the free games, It is said
by promoters and handlers that
this runs from 50 to 60 per cent
of the gross receipts, but most
players ratc this percentage as
far t oo high.
Los Angeles is one of the two
large manufacturing centers of
the games, the othcr being Chi·
cago. On the Pacific Coast Los
Angeles people are among the best
patrons.

A petition is being circulated in
:Pueblo to determine whether or
not the operation of coin machines
shall be banned. At present a $25
per year license fee is being paid
by the operators and no alarm is
felt by them on the outcome of
the petition.

LOS ANGELES:-The New Deal
:Amusement Co. is making tremen-
cous strides with their new five-
;toot table, The Triple Thrill. Dur-
ing the past month distributors
h ave been appointed in various
sections of the country and pro-
Quction arranged to care for quan-
tity orders.
The Triple Thrill uses the well-
known ball ejecting principle in
three pockets instead of one or
two. The cabinet is modernistical-
ly finished in two ton,es and the
playing field is beautifully decor-
ated,
According to Phil Weiner, man-
ager of the New Deal, the Triple
e.l'hrill is really a triple thrill, for
on locations it has surpassed the
Jntake on numerous other favored
games.
