and wonderful music box fare. Na-

Tears From Your Eyes" is surefire
stuff for music boxes. It's backed with
"One Sunday Afternoon" which is
good, but not good enough. Columbia
38364. While we're about it, we may
as well suggest that you acquire "The
Money Song" by Clark. This one is
novelty but definitely of the first
water. "Gloria," the plattermate, is
simply another name-of-a-girl tune.

The same Jack Smith we mentioned
earlier has something good in "Corn-
belt Symphony" and we know it will
sell. His "Cuanto Le Gusta" is truly
fine. If there is another vocalist who
puts as much into a song as Smith,
we'd like to kn°ow who it is. Capitol

"If I Steal A Kiss" is Sinatra at his
best. Frankie Boy is relaxed, phrasing
is well done and the musical back-
ground is made to order for Sinatra's
style. Johnny Johnson comes close to
Frankie's effort. You can't go wrong
on either. Columbia 38334 or MGM

The King Cole Trio has done an up
to snuff job on "Straighten Up And
Fly Right" to bring to life an old one.
Their arrangement is tricky, rhythmic
and outstanding. It just depends on
whether people have had too many of
these revivals crammed down their
ears. "Gee, Baby, Ain't I Good To
You" is the plattermate. Capitol
15270.
Benny Goodman has enlisted the aid
of Red N orvo, et al, to do a master-
ful job on "The Varsity Drag." We
sat in with Goodman back in 1933
when he was emerging as one of the
g·reatest popular musicians of our
generation. That was when he had
everyone singing "Goody, Goody" with
Helen Ward on the vocal. Today Ben-
ny is just as great and his "Varsity
Drag" is perfection. "The Maidens of
Cadiz' 'is on the other side and it, too,
is easy on the ears. There's no vocal
here for there isn't anyone who could
do it justice with Goodman. Capitol
15286.
"Tuscaloosa Bus" is the latest re-
lease credited to Johnny Mercer. Mer-
cer has that appeal which always
taxes one's vocabulary. If you think
about the tunes he's turned out, con-
sider that he's almost Dixieland per-
sonified and then listen, you'll know
what we mean. "Tailgate Ramble"
isn't up to what we always expect of
Mercer but it's still good. Capitol
15285.
Margaret Whiting, whose dad, the
late Dick Whiting, turned out so many
hits, has done very well with "Far
Away Places," Her "My Own True
