• A new machine has made its ap
pearance called the “ King’s Horses.”
This machine was first announced >
something over a year ago but was
withdrawn from the market until cer
tain new features could be worked
out. This machine employs the run
ning horses and the odds indicator.
In addition to this standard feature,
the manufacturers have developed a
system of slots to make it possible
for as many as eight players to play
the machine at one time. These slots
accommodate four coins — penny,
nickel, dime and quarter.
This is the first time a machine of
this type has employed the 4-way
feature.
According to J. W. Wertheimer,
sales manager of the Ad-Lee Com
pany, the rights to produce this type
of mechanism were secured from the
original developer of the Derby Gum
Vender several years ago. In 1929
designers were put to work in de
veloping a machine that would not
only give the race horse idea to the
game but provide the new features
that are now offered.
There has been a great deal of in
terest shown in the machine and a
checkup on collection reports shows
that it has a strong appeal with the
player. “ Operators tell us,” Mr.
Wertheimer said, “ that the four-coin

feature enables them to take in as
much as $2.00 each time the machine
is played. The first time it has been
possible for that much money to be
played into any machine in the his
tory of the industry. This feature
alone not only appeals to the opera
tors but the public because they fig
ure they are getting more for their
money when they play.
“ A number of extra workers have
been put on the job turning out
King’s Horses games to meet the de
mand.”
Mr. Wertheimer told the C oin
M achine J ournal that this is the
best number they have produced
since the E-Z Ball Gum Vender
which was a sensation a few years
ago.

NEEDLES & BEER
Being both hungry and thirsty
I’ve opened up a real jobbing
business at 850 Blackhawk St.,
Chicago. The jobbing business
is so that I can eat, and it’s lo
cated kitty-corners from PRI-
MA brewery so we can all
drown that thirst.
The needles have nothing to do
with beer, but incidentally the
beer business has put real pep
in phonograph operations. What
this business needs right, now is
a shot in the arm with the right
needle. Quick, Watson, the
NEEDLE! Believe me, boys,
I’ve got it. 2000 plays without
a scratch. Send for sample, only
50c.
Also a full line of machines,
phonograph repair parts and
supplies for all kinds. Mail or
ders invited. Visitors cordially
welcome. Loaf if you want to.
No secrets here. And Service
with a smile. #
If you like this half column,
drop me a card and say so—
I’ll put you on my mailing list.
And don’t forget that order for
needles. Gash, Money Orders
or Checks if they stick.

Despite a warning appearing in an
other publication last year, the de
mand for American-made machines
and games in England and Europe
seems to grow rather than diminish.
Already this summer several repre
sentatives of British concerns have
visited the United States lining up
products to sell in England and
Europe.
The Vix Manufacturing Co., Ltd.,
London, is the latest seeking repre
sentatives lines for distribution, and
have asked American producers to
submit their offers.

has been developed similar to that
used on the race tracks.
The employe in the plant who be
lieves that his department will head
the sales honor roll for the month
backs up his belief by securing these
tickets.

The grand race is on and the win
ners of the sales contest will be' an
nounced at a later date. Operators
who visited the plant were surprised
to see signs about quoting odds and
other signs indicating the betting
commissioner’s office and the like.
This is one of the most novel sales
contest arrangements ever conducted
by a coin machine manufacturer and
has been very successful in enlisting
the loyalty and support of every em
ploye from the shipping department
on up to the department heads.

• The Mills Novelty Company is
conducting an entirely new type of
sales contest known as the October
Sweepstakes. The whole set-up is pat
terned after a modern race track. The
departments are divided into sections
and are known around the plant as
the stables of Colonels Fred, Ralph,
Herbert and Hayden Mills.
Each of these Colonels are sup
posed to conduct stables and have en
tered their various sales executives
and other officials as running horses
in the race. Each of the stables con
tributes a prize for the best showing
and in order to stimulate the interest
of employees about the plant tickets
are sold to everyone in the factory
and offices. Interest is created by a
A loud speaker broadcast is con
ducted at the plant every day and
some well known coin machine fig
ures have appeared as guests of honor,
giving the race enthusiasts inspira
tional talks.
Considerable comment has been
heard around the trade about this
contest and everyone is watching the
results with keen interest.
