Some
Methods of Anchoring
Machines
Give Attention to Appearance and Security of Machines; See
That They Are Properly Anchored
| HE best insurance against
theft and breakage of out­
door machines is a good an­
chor. A machine securely and prop­
erly anchored will get more atten­
tion than one which is poorly an­
chored.
There are several methods em­
ployed by experienced operators in
securing their machines to their lo­
cations. The two expansion bolt
methods give direct mooring to
walls. The systems are identical,
except for the type of wall plug
used. The expansion bolt uses a
metal cone or core that expands
when bolt or screw is driven into
the plug, while the plug is a fibre
core which gives practically the
same results.
When installing an expansion
bolt the sleeve is driven farther to­
ward base of cone and is expanded,
generally, by the tapered forma­
tions of the cone, to any degree re­
quired for swedging tightly against
the sides of hole, giving perfect
holding contact throughout the
chine- casting. Any obj ect may be
attached with a standard screw or
bolt of suitable diameter.
The heavier the load attached,
the more forcibly must the cone
wedge against the sleeve, giving
firmer contact and still greater hold
to a degree surpassing the tensile
strength of any screw or bolt. This
may be readily demonstrated by
setting one wherever convenient,
and applying a test.
The anchor may be relied upon to
sustain any load that can be in­
trusted to the strongest bolt of cor­
responding size to be used with it.
In contrast with two or four-way
expanding shields with rigid spurs
and corrugations, to crack or crum-

Method employed to set crowners for
concealing bolt and screw heads,
length and circumference of the an­
chor. Thus consolidated with the
wall material the anchor provides a
machine-threaded hole the same as
an ordinary tapped hole in a ma­
ble and rake out the wall material,
the complete contact of the anchor
holds all particles solidly and ex­
erts a binding, reinforcing action on
the material making it as firm as
before-the hole was drilled.
As this makes for greater effec­
tiveness, it also adds immeasurably
to the rigidness of the anchorage
and to its permanence under severe
conditions.

Stud Type Expension Bolts
These bolts were designed, pri­
marily, for holding heavy street
lighting posts but are also adapted
for any other fastenings which are
to be subjected to heavy strain, such
as scales.
So great is the holding power of
this anchorage, that when set in
strong stone or concrete with only
its one primary sleeve expanded, the
bolt shank can be pulled in two, un­
der a load of about 13,000 pounds,
without the anchorage yielding.
As compared with the method of
pouring lead or sulphur the saving
in time alone, by the use of these
bolts, will more than pay for their
cost, besides affording double the
security.
Any desired combination of sec­
ondary units and spacing sleeves
may be used, the one primary sleeve
being sufficient for all ordinary set-
