Yes it has grandchildren in the form
of the “Tom Thumb” scale • and yet
except for exclusive ticket scale op-

operators running more than a mere
handful of these ideal service units.

Practically every idea that has
been built into weighing scales of
recent years was tried out in one
form or another many years ago,
and for some reason or other was
dropped — and later taken back
again in some new form.

Patents on a small personal
weighing scale were taken out as
early as 1897, but the scale* was
never placed on the market because
it was thought impractical at the
time. Nowadays the demand is for
the small scale, although the “big
boys” are still holding their own on
some locations.
The first springless scale, known
as the Everett, was imported into
this country in 1886 just forty-six
years ago. The Everett is shown on

Thirty years ago a talking scale
was brought out. It soon gave way
to its predecessor the silent scale.

the very plausible explanation was
made that the tendency to specialize
has given the ticket scale to one
branch while other operators gravi
tate to different types. Neverthe
less it is a point for those interested
in scale merchandising to consider
when- probing the operating or sales
possibilities of feature machines.
Back in the early days around
thirty years ago there lyere two
main scale companies, known as the
Automatic- Vending Company and
the National Automatic Weighing
Machine Company, who were close
rivals in the development of the
various types of scales.
