TRAIN GIRL MECHANICS
To offset the drain on man
power, the automatic merchan
dising industry is seriously con
sidering t h e employment of
women in positions previously
held by men only. S e v e r a l
operators already have hired
women for servicing, and sev
eral others including Rowe Ci
garette Service, New York City,
are employing women as shop
mechanics.
Baltimore Cigarette Service
appears to have been the first
operating company to hire wo
men for servicing machines.
According to Louis Bogahs,
manager, the experiment in
volved too few women over too
brief a period to justify defi
nite conclusions. However, Bo
gahs asserted, while it appears
that women may not be able to
achieve the speed characteris
tic of servicemen, they are not
so slow as to be unsatisfactory.
At Rowe Cigarette Service
Company several women have
been engaged and trained to
repair or adjust slug ejectors.
Sal Sparacino, Rowe’s shop
manager, states that he is well
pleased with the work these
girls are doing.
These w o m e n mechanics
take the slug ejectors apart,
clean them thoroughly, and
make all adjustments required
for precise coin testing.
The experiment has been so
successful that Rowe is now
beginning to train the girls in
the repair of plunger housings
and other complicated cigar
ette machine parts.
First it was Western Union
girls, then mailwomen, now
girl mechanics and service wo
men. Tomorrow— who knows?

NEW FORMS HELP
OPERATORS COMPLY
• To serve operators with their
war-time requirements f o r
keeping records r e q u i r e d by
the f e d e r a l l a w , Charles
Fleischmann, of the Baltimore
Salesbook Co., 120 West 42nd
St., New York City, has devel
oped items which will h e l p
operators comply with the law.
A new form V-55 is a simple
V i c t o r y Tax Record Book
whereby the operator can keep
a complete record of all salar
ies and wages paid his employ
ees, as well as deductions from
each week’s pay check. The
5% Victory Tax became effect
ive January 1, 1943. Every em
ployee earning over $12 a week
must receive a receipt for in
come including tax and other
deductions. Form V-55 is a
simple and inexpensive method
to keep such a record..
Another is the Daily Truck
Report Pad to be used with the
operator’s Certificate of War
N e c e s s i t y . The Office of
D e f e n s e Transportation re
quires a record of the daily use
of each commercial vehicle.
You and your service men will
find this pad particularly help
ful to substantiate claims for
needed gasoline and tires.
Form “H ”, the H a n d y s e t
Location Agreement, is proving
very valuable and timely due
to Federal Taxes, and the new
F e d e r a l Tax on all phono
graphs. This Location Agree
ment form has a tax clause in
it. More operators are taking
advantage of war conditions
to insist on written signed a
greements for one or two years
at more equitable terms, con
sidering higher operating costs.
Information, descriptive cir
culars, and prices on the above,
and other forms used by opera
tors will be sent on request by
Mr. Fleischmann. Write to him
at 120 WTest 42nd Sreet., New
York City.
