Don’t take much stock in this
“Natural-born-salesman” busi
ness. Why, the world’s heavy
weight wrestling champion and
the next chap were “Natural-
born,” with arms, as babies. As
babies, their arms were no doubt
about the same. Just like all
babies’ arms—soft and dimpled.
There is no difference in the
“Natural-born” condition — ap
plied to success in your chosen
field.
There is a whale of a differ
ence, in another direction. Is
the difference in the strength of
this champion wrestler’s arm
—an arm that can nearly crush
a man’s skull with his famous
headlock— and the other chap’s
today, due to any condition with
which they were born?
Not much!
The difference between the
champ’s arm and the other
chap’s arm today is purely a dif
ference of training, develop
ment, exercise, toward the end
of tremendous strength and
power.
Have you ever seen a “Na
tural-born” salesman? No one
has, truthfully.
"N A TU R A L"?
There may be some who have
a little better aptitude than
others, but that is not a para
mount or a governing condition.
The good salesman — the suc
cessful coin machine operator—
is pretty largely a combination
of hard work, a desire to serve,
and common sense, together
with a knowledge of a certain
few fundamental principles of
psychology that hold good for
the entire universe.
Human nature in its bulk is
pretty much the same. And by
“psychology” we do not mean
anything “highbrow.” It nar
rows down to a knowledge of the
way the human mind works and
reacts under certain selling con
ditions.
Successful selling— successful
operating — is simply a success
ful association with other
people.
The first thing a salesman has
to learn is to become thoroughly
and completely sold on his job;
sold on the opportunity that
exists; and in his home terri
tory.
