For Curb M eter D am age
Tamper with one of the city’s 317
new downtown parking meters with
intentions of damaging it and you
face a possible stiff fine or jail
sentence, Municipal Justice Koepke
said.
The justice was not issuing a warn
ing on the matter, merely explaining
that wilful damage to one o f the
curb meters can be construed as
malicious destruction of property—a
misdemeanor punishable by a maxi
mum $500 fine or 90-day jail sentence,
or both.
Koepke pointed out also that over
time parking violations in the me
tered areas will cost a maximum $1
fine, second and subsequent offenses
included.— (Saginaw, Mich. News.)

No “ Breaking In”
Pfanstiehl N eedle
The Pfanstiehl Chemical Company
of Waukegan has just made another
startling announcement that is cer
tain to be of paramount interest to
music operators everywhere.
The
announcement has to do with the new
“ break in” feature of their 4000 play
Pfanstiehl phonograph needle, which
further reduces record wear.
The “break in” feature, officials of
the company explained, is a new
secret process o f applying an ex
tremely high polish to the entire sur
face of the needle point which gives
the equivalent of actually playing the
needle on three or four records. In
other words, Pfanstiehl needles will
now be furnished to operators already
“ broken in.”
Bill Hemminger, Sales Manager of
Pfanstiehl, in commenting on the
new “ break in” feature, said, “ When
we introduced the new 4000 play
Pfanstiehl needle we were confident
that we would bring to the music
operators a great advancement in
needle design. An advancement that
would directly benefit the operators,
not only by increased patronage due
to the improvement of the recordings,
but also by greatly reducing and
simplifying his service requirements.
The tremendous enthusiasm d isplayed
over the Pfanstiehl needle has very
definitely confirmed our belief.
“ But just to introduce a better
needle was not enough. We at Pfan
stiehl believe that nothing is so good
that it cannot be improved, and that
the only way to improvement is
through research and in v estig a tio n .
Thus, when our chemists and meta-
lurgists had perfected the P fa n stie h l
needle, they were told to continue
with their investigation of means of
improving it. The most recent re
sult of their efforts has been the
“break in” process. This process,
which for obvious reasons remains
secret, enables us to add an extreme
ly high polish to the entire surface of
the needle point. Adding this polish
is equivalent to playing the needle
on three or four records the time
generally considered the “ break in
periods. Thus, record wear is further
reduced.
“ We are confident that this new
feature will not only be o f tremen
dous interest to our hundreds o f
satisfied users, but also to every
music operator throughout the in
dustry.

Pleased with the equipment in
stalled, and with the services ren
dered in 1939, the Concessionaire
for Coni and Vending Machines at
the iSan Francisco World's Fair
has again awarded Oakland Ciga
rette Service, Inc., the exclusive
Privilege of operating cigarette
machines within the Exposition
grounds during 1940.
Oakland Cigarette Service, one
° f the largest operations on the
West Coast, uses only Rowe ma
chines. In 1939, the firm installed
125 Rowe Royals throughout the
great Fair on Treasure Island, and
this year, an equal number of
Rowe Presidents will serve the
millions who march through the
Exposition’s turnstiles from May
25th to September 29th.
Speaking of their 1939 experi
ence, IMr. Harry G. Cisterman,
Manager of Oakland Cigarette
Service, writes: “ 567,033 packs of
cigarettes were sold last year—
an amount equivalent to one ciga
rette for every visitor.”

Architecture for a D ay
On Saturday, May 25, a group of
fifty workers in Mills Novelty Com
pany’s office and factory, who are
keenly interested in modern design,
both industrial and architectural,
made a trip to Racine, Wisconsin, to
study the famous new S. C. Johnson
Building designed by Frank Lloyd
Wright. This was agreed on by all
to be one of the most inspiring ex
periences of their lives and will be
long remembered. A spirited debate
pro and con of the features of this
unique office structure was led by
Jim Mangan, who selected six Mills
employees to act as judges and an
swer all questions put to them by
the audience of Mills a*d Johnson
employees.
Among those present with their
wives and friends were: James Man
gan, Hans Schwigart, Larry Burn
ham, Blanche Banks, L. Traxel, Hans
Steffensen, David Green, Gwen Des-
plenter, Milton Long, George Dard-
win, Harold Sloier, J. P. Ryan, Sid
Cohn, Everett Eckland, Paul Bourn,

NEW YORK
Faber, Coe & Gregg, Inc., hold
ers of the exclusive contract for
the sale of tobacco products on
Fair-managed properties at the
New York World’s Fair, have
chosen The Rowe President for
the sale o f cigarettes through ma
chines. More than 75 Presidents
already have been installed in
conspicuous locations through the
Exposition.
Choice of The President, by this
nationally known concessionaire,
was largely influenced by the sen
sational beauty of the new ma
chines, and by the reputation
which Rowe products have earned,
over a period of many years, for
dependable performance.
Comments in the trade journals,
from concessionaires, and even
from the public, have evidenced
surprise and pleasure concerning
the striking appearance of The
President, which, everywhere, is
gaining constantly greater recog
nition as, “ America’s Preference.”
