Omaha Operators Form
New Association
Omaha, Nebr.— Coin machine men
of this city have recently formed an
organization known as the Mer
chants’ Amusement Association as a
means of bettering the business and
public opinion. The association was
formed because of recent dissension
among several local operators. City
officials found out that location own
ers were unwilling to make any com
plaints, but rather wished to have
the operators iron out their difficulties
among themselves.
For the last two years pinballs and
phonographs have operated under an
ordinance whereby pinball games pay
an annual tax of $10 and music ma
chines a tax of $5. The city reported
that in 1938 it collected $2,300 on
phonographs and $6,000 on pinball
machines.
Joe Rothcup is president of the
new organization. Fred White is at
torney for the group. Other members
of the executive committee are Abe
Venger, Tony Mangano and Jack
O ’Donnell.
N. Y. Cigarette Tax
Yields $2,979,216
Albany, N. Y. — The New York
penny-for-ten cigarette tax netted
the State a profit of $2,979,216, ac
cording to reports from the taxation
department. Close to fifty per cent
of this amount, or $1,309,164, was
derived through the sale of stamps
before the levy went into effect on
July 1.
Propose Increase of
Ohio Cigarette Tax
Columbus, Ohio.— William S. Evatt,
State Tax Commissioner, has pro
posed to increase the State’s revenue
from the cigarette tax $400,000 a
year by allowing only half the dis
count given to dealers for affixing
and canceling tax stamps.
The discount would be cut from 10
per cent to 5 per cent as of August
31. The State law permitted a dis
count up to 10 per cent of the value
of the stamps and the old tax com
mission allowed the full amount.
However, the old commission’s regu
lations ceased on August 31, and
Commissioner Evatt decided on the
cut after he made a study of the cost
of affixing stamps on cigarettes. He
also stated that the cut was being
made because the tax department did
not possess the authority to reduce
taxes passed by the Legislature, and
that the 10 per cent discount was in
reality a reduction.
