27,000 Pennies! And Without
Coin Chutes
A R N T J O H N S O N , rural m ail car

in 27,000 pennies a t his local bank
recently and purchased a snow m o

the drifts in the w inter tim e.
The pennies accum ulated a t a sur
prising rate, Johnson explained. He
bought stam ps in sheets a t the post
office and saved the pennies which
were placed in ru ra l m a il boxes to
provide postage fo r letters and pack

He started storing the pennies in
tobacco tins and the num ber o f tin s

Johnson took them to the bank in
two large m ilk pails, and bank officials
said th a t the heap o f 27,000 pennies
made one o f the largest piles o f one-
cent pieces they had ever encountered.
