lyTILLS N O V E L TY CO. has now de
veloped a floor-type Golf Ball
Vender somewhat similar in appear
ance to the new Club Bell, but which
is especially designed for handling
g olf balls.
The new G'olf Ball Vender has a
capacity o f 130-150 balls. It registers
each coin played into the machine and
registers each g olf ball vended by it.
This permits the operator to leave the
key o f the Golf Ball Vender compart
ment with the professional o f the club
who can fill this whenever necessary.
There are thousands o f private and
public g o lf clubs throughout the Uni
ted States. Each o f them is a poten
tial location fo r this machine. Here
is a machine that operates in exactly
the same manner as a Bell, but in
stead o f paying rewards in coins or
checks, it pays awards in g o lf balls
o f nationally known, widely adver
tised brands.
The usual procedure in placing Golf
Ball Venders is to purchase the g olf
balls from the club professional at the
full retail list price. A fter the cost
o f the g olf balls has been deducted,
the net earnings are divided on a SO
SO basis.
By purchasing the balls
from the club professional at the full
list price, the operator does not in any
way compete with the sale o f g olf
balls by the professional, and due to
the large quantity purchases, this nat
urally gives the professional an inter
est in the success o f the machine.
Locations o f this kind need to be col
lected only about once a week as the
vending compartment can be refilled
by the professional whenever neces
sary. The operator can tell from a
glance at both registers exactly how
many quarters have been played into
the machine and how many balls have
been vended.
Aside from the unusually high
earnings to be obtained with the Golf
Ball Vender itself, it has another

great advantage to the operator.
A great many private g olf club?
encounter a deficit each year whicL
must be made up from private sul
scriptions and assessments collected
from the members. A great many of
these clubs have no idea o f the earn
ings o f Bell type machines. Often
they have such set opinions regarding
equipment o f this type that they will
not even allow the operator to dem
onstrate what the machine will do.
A m ajority o f g o lf clubs now want
Golf Ball Venders. As the popularity
o f this machine is quickly demon
strated to the house committee, it is
easy to induce them to try a few
Bells. The Bell entertains the mem
bers and earns enough to eliminate
special assessments. A great many
members who might strenuously ob
ject to special assessments o f any
form cheerfully play machines, feel
ing that the machines are giving them
amusement, and, at the same time,
they are helping the club.
From the standpoint o f the club,
the machine is the ideal method o f
raising extra money because it collects
its earnings from the players who
make the most use o f the club fa cili
ties.
Everywhere there are g o lf courses
— private and semi-private, and pub
lic fee courses. All o f these are loca
tions fo r Golf Ball Venders. When
the actual operation and method of
handling this machine is explained to
the professional, there is no reason
why he shouldn’t be very enthusiastic
about having one installed.
Fresh’nd-Aire Go.
Plans Spring Drive
F or many months, engineers o f the
Fresh’nd-Aire Company have been
making extensive preparations fo r a
new line o f Fresh’nd-Aire circulators
— with freshening and purifying fe a
tures. And now their large factory
is in full production.
In 1936, their activities in the fan
line were confined to making large
fans fo r others, using motors o f out
side manufacture. However, fo r 1937,
besides conducting all sales activi
ties themselves, they have extended
their activities to include special re
designing and rebuilding o f motors

to special specifications that insure
long life and trouble-proof per
form ance.
“ W e have incorporated many cus
tom built features in motors that are
not available from outside sources,”
said Mr. R. W . Devore, president o f
the Fresh’nd-Aire Company. “ By
doing so, we claim to have achieved
efficiency and perform ance in addi
tion to sturdiness and reliability far
superior to those that could be
achieved with other m otors.”
“ Our goal is always to build the
finest most efficient air circulators in
the world with air freshening fea
tures that excel all others. W e also
aim to build Fresh’nd-Aire to last
longer than the man who buys one.
As we say in our literature, thei’e is
only one Fresh’nd-Aire and we chal
lenge all comparison o f Fresh’nd-
A ire’s exclusive features o f finest
performance and highest quality o f
construction throughout.”
Fresh’nd-Aire is built in one o f the
finest, largest and best equipped fa c
tories, devoted exclusively to fan
manufacture, in the world.
Mice Replace Balls
in This Game
A unique parody o f the pin ball
game has been perfected by Paul
Jones and William Junda, two high
school teachers o f Belleville, N. J.
They have corralled a choice collec
tion o f field mice and are goin g to
ship them td their concession at
Atlantic City, N. J. They expect to
have a very profitable summer, pro
viding the police and the humane
societies leave them alone.
The two men have arranged a large
wooden playing field, patterned along
the same lines as the ordinary pin
ball field, but about ten times as large
and filled with numbered holes. There
is a trap at the far end o f the field.
When the patron inserts a coin in
the chute, instead o f a ball rolling
out, a mouse is popped forth. The
mouse is supposed to move down the
field and go into one o f the holes.
I f the hole which the mouse enters
is the one on which the patron has
placed a bet, the payoff is made in
merchandise.
Bill Rabkin, o f International Muto-
scope Company, wrote the A u t o m a t i c

from Paris, France. He said
that Paris is an operator’s paradise,
with automatic machines working 24
hours daily.

Ace Vending Steps Up
Foreign Sales
Ace Vending Company officials re
port a new plan to speed the develop
ment o f foreign sales. Ben Stein is
in charge o f the export department.
“ Communications by cable are used
to expedite sales,” Stein says. “ In
this way we have been able to greatly
speed up business. We also prepay
the return cable and therefore always
get action from the other side. Rather
than carry on a long correspondence
with the foreign buyer, we immediate
ly cable him i f we note from his letter
that he is really interested in buying
used games and quote prices to him
from this city.
“ In this way we have been able to
immediately eliminate any curiosity
seekers and get right down to busi
ness with those inquirers that mean
business.
It may be an expensive
system in the beginning, but we feel
sure that it is working out fo r the
best o f all concerned, and that in the
long run it is the most economical.”
Beer by Meter— Idea
for Manufacturers
The idea o f selling beer by meter
instead o f by the stein or quart, has
been voiced by Mrs. Helen Pannes,
o f Chicago.
“ I got the idea from these parking
meters that you see along the curbs
in some o f the small towns,” said
Mrs. Pannes. “ In those things you
put a nickel into the slot and a flag
comes up to say that you may park
fo r an hour. W ell, why not have a
lot o f such gadgets around a bar?
The customer comes in; he drops his
money into the m eter; then he drinks
beer until the flag goes down again.
“ In my place you drop 60 cents
into a slot and then you get all o f
the beer you can drink fo r an hour—
a cent a minute, that’s the rate.”
“ W here is this join t?” inquired a
chorus o f eager voices.
“ I haven’t started it yet,” said Mrs.
Pannes. I just came around to see
if we could make some arrange
ments to operate the bartenders on
a meter, too.”

Rudolph W ur li tze r Co., who prepares the
many beautiful pieces of literature and
publicity produced by the com pany.
“ A fundamental policy o f The
Rudolph W urlitzer Company” , said
R. G. N'orman, Advertising Manager,
“ is that we believe our responsibility
to operators goes further than the
mere manufacture o f the Merchan
dise they use.
“ No matter how good any product
may be, the public has to be told
about it to really get the stage set
fo r the distributive organization. A d
vertising is a big force assisting
operators in securing new locations
with the minimum amount o f time
expended. Create the desire on the
part o f the location ahead o f time
and the operators’ location problems
are made all the easier.”
A t the present time the W urlitzer
company is circularizing close to
400,000 locations o f all kinds through
out the United States and Canada,
telling them why the W urlitzer-Sim
plex Phonograph is a necessary item
fo r their establishments. This is one
o f many similar mailings this com
pany has made within the past fou r
years and the cumulative benefits o f
such advertising is reflected in the
demand upon operators fo r Simplex
installations.

Supreme Gives Strong
Guarantee
Bill Blatt, president o f Supreme
Vending Company, Inc., reports that
his firm has placed its personal guar
antee on the Daval Baseball games
which are now arriving from the fa c
tory in large quantities. Blatt states
that the game is one o f the most per
fect on the market and that his firm
has helped to overcome some o f the
minor defects.
“ A fter making complete tests o f the
games now arriving from the fa c
tory,” Blatt states, “ we are ready to
guarantee them as 100 per cent per
fect in every detail. The game is so
well built that it will withstand the
worst abuse it can be given on any
location.
Our own mechanics had
much to do with the perfecting o f the
game and operators can now be cer
tain that the Baseballs they get from
us will be better than any game they
ever before operated. Daval Baseball
is the kind o f a game that will last
fo r a long time and will earn big
profits fo r the operator because it
meets the demand fo r a fast-action
game with plenty thrills.”
O rToole Photog Is
Busy Man
Official photographer o f Fitzgib
bons Distributors, Inc., Eastern w ig
wam o f the Bally Company, is one o f
the busiest men in the city. E very
day operators come in for repeat or
ders on Bally Booster, it is reported.
While waiting fo r the games to be ar
ranged fo r them they are inducted
into the popular O’Toole Indian Tribe
and have their pictures taken in full
Indian regalia.
John A. Fitzgibbons is as busy as
a bee trying to satisfy the demands
for Bally Booster. He’s rushing out
the games, he says, as fast as they
come in. As he puts it: “ It seems
that the more Bally Boosters we sell
the more the operators want. The
factory is working day and night try
ing to keep up with the demand and
we will supply every one o f those
waiting fo r the game i f they will only
have a little patience. W e have been
assured by Jim Buckley and Ray
Moloney that we will soon be getting
even faster and bigger shipments o f
Bally Booster.”
