survey by the Premium Advertising
Association of New York discloses
that probably more than $450,000,000
worth of these bribes to buy will be
offered in 1936. These figures are
based on the statistics of this year’s
premium business.
'T'HE M O T IO N P IC T U R E A L M A
N A C for 1935-1936 reveals some
interesting statistics concerning the
motion picture industry in the United
States. There is a total of 18,250
theaters in this country, out of
which number 13,500 are in opera
tion. The aggregate seating capacity
is 11,132,000, which means that there
are nine persons to every theater
seat in cities of more than 100,000.
The average weekly attendance is
75,000,000.
'J 'H E sales manager of a large supply
and manufacturing firm, which
holds approximately eighteen impor
tant meetings each year in various
parts of the country, reports that he
has a strict rule that each three-day
meeting must be rehearsed at least
twice before the meeting takes place.
Every executive permitted to speak
must deliver his speech twice in re
hearsal before addressing his audi
ence. The iron-clad regulations were
adopted, the sales manager points
out, for the following reasons:
For an average three-day meeting,
salaries, hotel bills, meals and ex
penses cost his firm about $7,100.
Since each day’s session lasts approx
imately six hours, or a total of eight
een hours for the three days, every
hour’s time costs the company $400,
every minute is worth $6.50. I f a
speaker is not required to determine
in advance exactly what he is going
to say, he will usually open his
speech with "W hen I was asked to
make this talk I tried to get out of
it because I am not very fam iliar
with the subject assigned to me,”
and so on and on until he has wasted
from $20 to $50 worth of time in
getting his bearings, making his
alibis, explaining that he is a rotten
speaker, and wondering audibly why
anyone asked him to speak. Further
more, by the time he has arrived
at the subject of his address, his
audience has lost interest in w hat
ever ideas he may have had to express.

Coin Parking
The parking meter idea has “caught
on” in Dallas, Texas. Four hundred
and fifty of the devices were installed
there on November 5 and city officials
were laying plans for placing another
five hundred and fifty.
Trouble was encountered with some
of the meters during the first few
days of operation, and motorists
parked their ears in these spots “free”
until a service man made the neces
sary adjustments.

W e will sell the right to manufacture this machine, including
the working patterns, templets, four color plates for p rin t
ing fronts, etc., for $800.00. Here is a wonderful opportunity
for an operator to have an exclusive territory. A ny machine
shop can assemble these machines.

A sample of the resentment aroused throughout the
industry is the following letter written to WLW by

Gentlemen:
As is our usual custom, the writer
and family were listening to W L W
broadcast last night. When the
K.O O LO X program was announced,
we listened to it as we would to any
other program.

However, when the “true” story of
pin ball machines was given, we were
frankly astounded. That the writer
of the “ M E L O D R A M A ” has reflected
on an entire industry that is giving
employment to thousands of people
in the United States, we will not
discuss in detail. We will leave that
to the manufacturers.

However, when this eager writer
for the sensational reflects on thou
sands of operators and merchants all
over the country, we feel some objec
tion should be raised. To begin with,
the writer and his customer-operators
are all law-abiding citizens. Most of
them have lived in their communities
most of their lives, and we resent
the reflection cast on us by this
writer. We wish to advise him to
begin w ith that we have no connec
tion with any “ C O U N S E L O R ” or
click in some other city. We, as well
as all of the other operators in this
territory operate our business as
any other business is conducted.
W e believe this writer, and the
manufacturers of K O O L O X would re
sent very much if we were to broad
cast the report that your product is
made of inferior materials and that
you are perpetrating a hoax on the
American people. We further feel
you would resent it if we stated your
announced contest was a frame-up
and that you will give the prizes to
certain picked people, regardless of
the merits of letters sent in. How
ever, this would be no more exag
geration than some of the statements
your “ character actors” portrayed on
this station broadcast.
First of all, let me inform this
writer on some pertinent facts that
he might have learned himself, if he
