Banning of Free Lunch
Aids Venders
A clipping from the Boston Globe
stating among other things that the
Quincy Liquor Dealers’ Association
has voluntarily recommended to the
License Commission that no shop,
store or restaurant where liquor is
sold, serve free food, was sent to
A u t o m a t i c A g e by The Vendex Com
pany of Boston.
“We also have information that the
State legislature of Rhode Island
passed a similar law last June,” said
Mr. Epstein of the Vendex firm.
“As this ruling prohibits the giving
away of free pretzels, beer chasers,
etc., it is a direct boost to the peanut
vending machine business and has so
far resulted in the sale of fifty booth
vending machines to a Quincy oper
ator who was influenced in making
this purchase by this ruling,” Mr.
Epstein reports.

Cracks Down
Boston, Mass.— Duping men of
small means into purchasing vending
machines by misrepresenting the prof
its and giving worthless verbal guar
antees, has been charged by the Bos
ton Better Business Bureau.
Complaints have been received by
the bureau that purported agents of
vending machine companies “guaran
teed” the devices would net a certain
profit or the machines would be relo
cated to assure this income.
It was charged the supposed income
failed to materialize and efforts to
have the machines relocated proved
fruitless.
The bureau’s report on the matter
states that most of the complainants
are men of modest circumstances. In
some cases they are men who have
been unemployed for some time and
easily induced to accept a proposition
which offered an apparent profit.

“We believe that this indicates a
certain trend toward doing away with
the free lunch of the old time saloon
and is of direct benefit to the oper
ator of peanut machines.
“We hope that this sentiment will
spread further and we are glad to
send in a report of one ruling by a
licensing board that has been bene
ficial to the operating fraternity,”
declared the Vendex official.
