Slugs Bring Headaches
in Waterbury
W aterbury, Conn., May 8.— Cheat
ing tactics are getting to be a head
ache for the proprietors who run coin
operated machines here after having
successfully stalled off police, news
paper, ministerial and otherwise in
vestigation. Now there is a firm in
Brooklyn that makes blank slugs, a
number of which have been imported
at 10 cents a hundred whether they
are for the quarter or nickel variety
and the machine purveyors are los
ing money.
The machine operator loses noth
ing for the proprietors must make up
the loss out of their own pocket. They
cannot appeal to the police since the
— well they can’t. They may bar the
person who plays the blank slug and
thereby lose his trade. In short they
are mourning for the return of the
old morality where a player fed a
“clipped” machine and took his loss.
“ Unsportsmanlike” the proprietors
term the practice. I f the so-called
jackpot is struck, the proprietors lose
more and more. Otherwise they have
to make up the nickel to the collector
for every blank slug. That cuts down
the percentage.
Perhaps the hardest blow is the
fact that a local concern makes the
slugs from zinc strips.
They are
not in the business of thw arting the
machines of course, but manufacture
them as tokens for the companies or
concerns ordering them.
No Wonder They
Were Removed
Camden, Ark.— Coin-operated m a
chines in Camden were licensed at
$7.50 per month by the city council
recently despite a vigorous protest
made by Mayor G. R. Haynie. A mo
tion to repeal the occupation tax
which taxes slot, m arlle and musical
machines $1 a month and raise the
rate to $7.50 was adopted with one
dissenting vote.
Owners of the machines were re
moving them from downtown stores,
it was reported, following the new
schedule of taxes.

used and applications must be ap
proved by the firm.

gantic Muskingum watershed con
servancy project recently laid plans
for providing the $2,000,000 the gen
eral assembly soon will be asked to
appropriate as the state’s share of
the $35,000,000 flood prevention en
terprise.
A nticipating that the first question
that will be asked when the appro
priation bill is introduced under au
thority of a special message from the
governor w ithin a few days will be:
“ Where will we get the money?” Con
servancy exponents believe they have
the answer.
In all probability, a bill will be in
troduced in either the house or sen
ate providing for an annual tax of
$5 on all vending machines operated
in the state.
Such tax, conservancy proponents
aver, would bring into the general
