number o f these cases. In other states,
, notably Chicago, 111., and St. Louis, Mo.,
injunctions have been issued against the
Police from interfering with this type o f
machine.
It is obvious, however, that a machine,
which, fo r a penny or a nickel supplies a
player with a number o f balls with which
he may amuse himself, is not o f itself a
gambling device.
The so-called Shannon Committee o f the
House of Representatives is conducting an
investigation on the interference o f the gov
ernment with private business and is also
handling the question o f coin-operated ma
chines. While it is yet too early to know just
what the committee will report and recom
mend, yet it will be interesting to learn
what its comment is with respect to coin
machines and their place in the catering
world. We quote our Washington corre
spondent: “ If any other evidence were
needed to emphasize the fact the American
people have a tendency to take things for
granted, to patronize liberally innovations,
without visioning their potentalities, the
long time it has taken the public to wake
up to the possibilities o f the coin-operated
amusement game would furnish a case in
point. Like unto the growth o f the auto
motive industry and its coagent, good roads,
during which the public complacently ac
cepted their adjuncts to modern transporta
tion without grasping their commercial pos
sibilities for a long time, being satisfied
merely to accept them as new form s of
recreation, so have the people thought o f
coin machines, apparently, as something
furnishing a new kind o f toy, but without
visioning its place in diversified business
lines. Naturally thousands have not failed
to see opportunities in it, and these are
making the industry one to be reckoned with
today, but the mass mind including the pub
lic authorities have failed to get the picture
as it is. . . .
From an economic standpoint in the State
of New Jersey it has been a means fo r hun
dreds of operators, with thousands o f de
pendents, to earn a livelihood and material
ly help solve their problems. Many thou
sands of merchants throughout the state are
deriving an additional source o f revenue
that is helping considerably to pay the'r
rants and therefore indirectly forestalling
foreclosures for non-payment o f taxes. A
new and novel medium, just happened, that
is accellerating the circulation of money.

Many, many factors are contributing to this
particular cycle and its results are uni
versally beneficial. Amusement games have
received the patronage o f the public be
cause it has furnished a mild and natural
outlet o f accrued feelings that are due to
the times.
Statesmen have been marveling fo r three
years why the American public who are
sorely pressed have curbed any radical ten
dencies. It is a little thing like an amuse
ment game, a business practically in pen
nies, that is helping to temper the people.
Giving them the patience to stand by until
their leaders lead. It is not lightening their
burdens but it certainly is their minds.
More and more reasons why it calls fo r tol
erance and benediction,
Sincerely yours,
