Baltimore May Close
Automatics on Sunday
Willis R. Jones, assistant attorney
general, has advised Police Commis
sioner Gither o f Baltimore, that as it
unlawful for humans to work on
Sunday, it is equally unlawful for
automatic machines to desecrate the
Sabbath. Th;s ruling was made in
reply to a request of William E.
Pathe, a local manager of a company
operating an automatic photographic
machine.
Jones is reported to have said: “ If
a person can not lawfully make sale
bimself on Sunday, it would seem to
he a subterfuge to permit him to
make such sales through the agency
° f an automatic machine. Moreover,
*t i-? not bel’eved that this machine
can be onerated on Sunday without
some labor be’ng required in con
nection therewith, such as that o f a
custodian to explain the operation o f
the device to prospective customers.”
