A few o f the more enterprising to
bacco shops have installed vending
machines fo r matches and postage
stamps. The sale o f matches is a
Government m onopoly and it is said
that the government has not favored
the use o f these machines fo r the
reason that six distinct types o f
matches are offered, the selling fa
cilities o f which it wishes to make
equal.
Postage stamps are sold by post
offices and by tobacco shops. Pres
ent postage rates are 50 centimes
fo r domestic letters and 1.50 francs
fo r foreign letters. I f there were
any assurance that these rates would

more general, especially in post of
fices where the purchase o f a stamp
often necessitates considerable wait
ing.
Vending machines fall under item
“ 646.” Those operated by clockwork
or electricity now pay 36 francs pef
kilo. Others pay 3.52 francs per kilo*
