“Wagon Wheel”
May Be Reduced
To 50-Gent Size
A movement is under way in Colo
rado fo r adoption o f a silver dollar
considerably smaller in size than the
present familiar “ cart-wheel.” An
increase in the mining industry o f
Colorado is seen if the proposal o f
fered fo r the new scientific dollar is
adopted by the Federal Government,
according to a press dispatch from
Denver.
The new coin, according to pres
ent discussion, would be composed o f
one ounce o f silver, 47 cents’ worth
o f gold and 3 cents’ worth o f alloy,
mostly copper. Such a composition
is pointed out as being a fair, equit
able representation o f the value o f
the country’s wealth, which is based
on gold and silver. Another advan
tage o f the new dollar, as contem
plated under the proposal, would be
its size, fo r it would be slightly larg
er than the 50-cent piece and o f a
thickness 20 per cent less than the
half dollar.
W ere such a piece adopted, C olo
rado, being one o f the largest p ro
ducers o f silver in the land, would
natu/ally benefit in a proposition
whose features would offer advan
tages to everybody. Manufacture o f
the coin would necessitate an in
creased production o f silver and this
would stimulate mining, put more
m oney into circulation and cause a
greater prosperity, the proponents
declare.
Discussion o f the proposal brought
out the cumbersomeness o f the pres
ent “ iron man,” the disadvantage o f
whose weight has caused the Eastern
section o f the country to shun it and
substitute the dollar bill.
