We handed the telegram to Opera
tor Charlie who happened to be in
the office.
“ Well,” quoth Charlie, “ I know the
taste of German beer, I know the
taste of London gin, and I know the
taste of Italian wine, but I don t
know the taste of French women.
We told him that reminded us of
a story got off by a couple of vaude-
villians. Said the first one:
“ I saw a goat down the street with
his nose cut off.”
“ How did he smell?” asked the
second one.
“ Terrible.”
That reminded Operator Charlie of
one. The stage cop arrested the
comedian.
. ,
. ,
“ What’s your name?’ demanded
the cop.
“ Jule,” replied the comedian.^
“ Jule? You’re name’s Julius.”
Said the comedian: “ If my name
was Bill would it be bilious? Or if
it was Jack would it be Jack-us.
Other stories were told which it
would be healthier not to pnnt.

James Atkinson Tells of
His Trip East
age
Walter H-
Howell
James Atkinson, veteran Chicago
operator, who sells four tons of pea
nuts a month on his extensive routes,
has just returned from an interesting
trip east. Jim, as all the boys know,
is a self-made man.
He left home
when he was foui'teen and has never
been back. His object on this trip
was to look up some of his father’s
family in New York state.
Jim went by way of Detroit, tak
ing the boat from there to Buffalo,
and on through various smaller cities
in New York. The thing that im-
pres;ed him most, he says, was the
fact that at all of the bus stops there
were post cards for sale and no stamp
machines.
Many of the people in
these places had never heard that
there were such machines, and one
Rochester man did not even know he
was allowed to sell stamps, Mr. A t
kinson reports.
-
"There is a great opening for
manufacturers as well as operators in
that territory,” declares Mr. Atkin
son. He also noticed the absence of
scale machines in Buffalo, and while
in Canada discovered that they had
practically no coin-controlled venders
of any description because so few of
them are built to work with Cana
dian coins.
“ Many of the operators were anx
ious to get acquainted with the newer
machines on the market, and I ad
vised them to get in touch with the
A U T O M A T IC AG E for information,
and advertised the vending machine
associations to them,” Jim tells us.
